Use double sided autobody tape and silicone. It's difficult to get the cover pressed on enough while silicone dries so I use the silicone to seal the double sided tape from the elements. I've done frame and swingarm protectors this way. Always works.

What sort of protection?

Carbon offers no protection against abrasion e.g. sliding down the tarmac. Kevlar is another story.

The CDT cover that we installed on my bike had a bolt on the top and bottom if I recall correctly. We also used some double sided tape to secure it on the sides and some silicone on the edges to keep dirt out.
