I agree that the R is a higher stressed engine, but its also blue printed and has lighter/ stronger metals in the engine. This is to alow it to safely rev to a higher limit and thus put out more power. Any engine when its used under race conditions will be more stressed. But used on the road under normal use they should both see the same distance. Unless it has an inherent fault.
I think the problem comes in when race tolerences are to tight for regular road use and thus longer service intervals. Ducati has done this before with old 900SS engines back in the 1970s What concerned me was if the bike I was looking at was a one of godgeon pin sezure, that would mean the engine was run low on oil, or some other mishap. I decided to go down to my local duncti workshop today. Seems the gearbox problems on 1098 R is comon. The good thing is that we are going over to the Ducati factory on Monday to talk with a contact there and get some more info on the repairs they did on the bike and find out the cause and to also get some history on another 1098R im looking at. I supose thats the good thing about being in Italy seems that some of the better ducati worksops have contact within Ducati. Will keep you posted. |
