yep, tassie sounds right, the starter can have the seal fail and the engine oil gets in there and stuffs it, the driven gear from the starter gear can come loose and fail to transfer the torque from the starter to the flywheel, but you will see that when you pull it to bits i guess, it's not hard by the way, just time consuming.

Change your plugs.

From what you say your starter is trying...and doesn't seem to be the issue. You aren't getting spark, hence the build of fuel from your injectors and the back fire.

Yeah could be but if a few start attempts are killing the battery the starter is taking all the power because it is not working as it should ie drawing exsessive amps and maybe not enough spark to fire the cylinders. Come to think of it, thats why my Harley wont start when cold

Thanks for the help so far guys!

I will check both of those issues, the starter and plugs. This is really strange because like you said waller, the bike *IS* trying to turn over, it just cranks and cranks then suddenly *POW*. However, for some reason the bike will start when I jump it off from a car battery (car turned off of course). I figure the plugs could have failed somehow due to the exhuast having that bung hole opened, causing it to run too rich or something. But then it doesn't make sense to me that the plugs should magically fire fine only under the condition it is getting a jump from another battery. I will keep you guys posted, but again, thanks so much for the guidance so far it has been very helpful.

Found this. The youtube video is exactly what my bike is doing, minus the occasional backfire. Seems the wires for our ducati's are not up to the task and easily corrode internally?

This guy sells a kit on ebay. Is this worth consideration too?

Hey Thanatos, heading on the right track. My harley stroker has given my starter a hard life for a few years now, It will only start cold if i jump it from a car battery. sounds familiar ? If i dont start on the second try its dead, i had the battery tested and it was good, I know for a fact the starter has had it, and like the Ducatis it neds a fast crank to get it going. I havnt bothered with the Harley as i dont ride it much now. I would pull that starter out and take the end off and see how worn things are. Check that you have a clean earth connection as well, before spending bucks on kits etc. Is your bike clean under the fairings or has it been exposed to alot of moisture and dirt ?

it certainly won't hurt, i fit a kit to mine, didn't fix my starting issue but always start with the easiest and cheapest options, and even if it doesn't help now it will make it easier to start when (if) your problem turns out to be something else and is fixed.
