I would go ahead and check the valves too. You already have the bike stripped down quite a bit. Only thing left to check valves is the radiator and shifting the air box to get the covers off.

Mine were within specs so I can't say how fun changing shims is, but it doesn't look like a lot of fun to me. Cams have to come out...

I checked the valves on my 916. It wasn't fun and took a while, but it really wasn't that bad. Fortunately they were within spec. Supposedly these are a bit easier.

I have about 6k on mine and I plan to wait until about 7k and then do the belts and valve check at the same time.
