I just corrected my statement for top speed. Read the following and it's not clear after you add speedometer error, etc.

Top speed of the Ducati 1098??? Lets see. Seeing as it cannot ride itself, on the road or track anyway. The question should really be...."How fast can MY Ducati 1098 go with MY ASS on the seat????

Rider skill, height, weight, body position and BALLS will be different for EVERY 1098/rider combination out there.

You want to know how fast YOUR Ducati 1098 goes??? Go to the track and air it out! The highest number you see under MPH is how fast the bike goes!

From what I've read the 1098 is limited to 173.3. This has been published by several mags (and I've posted it before as well). There is a theoretical top speed given gearing, then there is the top speed allowed by computer limitation.

Like the owl and the tootsie pop.... 1, 2, 173.3

173.3

Hi,

I saw 191mph out in Europe... I thought cool till I realised I'd gone to a 190/50 rear tyre and the speedo comes off the rear wheel... doh!

There's a big difference in circumference between the 50 and 55. Hence the speedo being out.

Jamie

Mine will hit the rev limiter in 6th gear without a problem with stock gearing which should be good for around 172. I will use a gps to confirm this in the future.

mate how can this be when the speedo pickups are on the rear disc ? changing tyre sizes wont change the speed the pickups move with the disc- if im wrong please explain, its 0400 in morning here and im at work, so maybe brain isnt working properly!

As I understand it, the distance the brake disc travels per revolution is unchanged, even though the smaller circumference tire is traveling a shorter distance. Since the bike doesn't know that the tire is smaller, it thinks that for each rev it is traveling a longer distance, thus the speedo will be reading higher than actual. For example, if the OEM has a circumference of two meters and you're brake disc is spinning at 1000 RPM, the bike thinks it's moving forward 2000 meters per minute; if your new tire has a circumference of 1.9 meters, you're really traveling at 1900 meters per minute.

Does anyone know how much speedo error there is with the 190/50, or do I need to go for a run with a GPS...?
