I think the stepper motor is the one that controls idle speed.

Different errors can be, open cct, short cct, position error ect, ect.

I have a check engine light that comes on every once in a while when the key is turned on and it won't allow me to start the bike. If I turn the key off and on again it usually goes away and everything is good. This has happened 10+ times. Is there any way I can get this code? Is it stored somehow?

With the key left on and the engine light lit, I think you hit the menu button up to get the code.

I only had it once when my reg failed a while back.

I don't understand.... A dealer has to honor a warrantee whether they sold the bike or not. Lets say I moved to your area and had a problem, your dealer would charge me 10% of my bikes cost to fix a problem that is covered under warranty? I must be missing something here......
