Default Damn bike fell over. Now what?

Long story short.... I was riding home tonight with my wife following me on her Triumph when I thought she flicked her light at me a few times, so I pulled over. Turns out it was actually my headlight blinking out (just had a burned out stator fixed btw) but that's another story. While I was talking to her and she asked me wtf I was talking about with her light, my bike (still idling in N on the side of the road) falls over on the kickstand side. WTF!? How does that even happen?

Damage:
1) cracked mirror housing
2) scuffed up side panel
3) frame tabs bent
4) Woodcraft peg bitched up
5) left Helibar clip-on bent
6) swingarm gouged from rearset heel guard
7) cheapo bar end trashed
8) CRG clutch lever scuffed a bit

Somehow the tail, front fairing and the magnesium stay escaped damage but I'm still pissed. Insurance is full coverage with State Farm and a $500 deductible. I'm sort of a perfectionist and I'm not going to be able to just "live with" the fucked up swing arm and body work. I know the rest is easy to fix but I'm betting that SF is going to call the bent tabs "frame damage" and possibly total my bike. Suggestions before I just go ahead and claim it?

My guess is that it might be less than $500 total to fix?

Get a swing arm cover...
Your insurance will go up for sure if you claim it.

Sorry to hear about your mishap duc.

There are several different scenarios you have to consider. Most people dont want to claim a total for something easily fixed. Some dont care. If it totals you have to consider buy-back and salvaged title. If it totals you also have to consider aftermarket parts value as they only cover a certain amount unless youve pay for more.

You can call your insurance company and talk with an agent and explain what happened and ask them what will happen to your insurance after if you do make a claim. I would guess that they will total it if you have a gouge in the swingarm and the rearset tabs are bent.

If you get lucky and have a cool insurance rep come out to look at the bike he will work with you and only claim a certain amount and make sure your bike does not get totaled.

Now depending on what you would like to do in regards to the bike, id get a torch and heat up the tabs real good and bend them back to straight as long as they arent bent in too far. Then not say anything to the insurance rep that comes out to look at the bike about them ever being bent.

You can get a set of mirrors on here for $100 bucks most likely when they pop up or im sure there are some on ebay. Side panel - if you know a good painter get him to fix it, if not just buy a new panel altogether. You can buy just the peg from woodcraft for pretty cheap. Im pretty sure Phil has a couple swingarms for sale at a cheap price and like new. get a new cheapo bar end, new clutch lever, new clip on. You will be able to replace all this very easily for the retail cost of the swingarm alone along with ur deductible.

Good Luck with it and Let us know what happens.

On man that sucks dude. I was pretty pissed when another rider tipped over onto me stop light. I didn't even want to pick up my bike. I don't know how the only damage was my bent shifter. If I were you I would either try and avoid showing him the frame tabs or I would have them fixed before the claims agent comes to look at the damage hopefully this would save you from being totaled. I've had to point most of the damage out to an adjuster when they came to look at my bike. A dealer will long everything out so better off showing him your self at your house. The tabs are a cheap fix if they can't be repaired so have insurance cover the rest.

Speaking from personal experience, I can say with certainty State Farm will not raise your rates due to any insurance pay out on your bike. The way my agent explained it to me is that insurance for motorcycles are treated differently than automobile coverage. As a result, any payout will not result in a surcharge. They will however consider dropping you from coverage depending on your claims history. I had a rather large payout by State Farm on one of my bikes which was a total loss. They not only paid out, they were very good about the whole process. Things may have changed since I had my claim many many years ago. But the claims adjuster didn't know too much about bikes. He just depended on the shop my bike was sent to for their assessment on what needed to be fixed. Once the threshold for total loss was met, the adjuster checked around the area for what the bike would be worth on the used market.

Nothing ever came of it. I have been able to get renewal coverage without a problem and even added an extra bike since then. Granted I haven't had any major claims since then.

Oh and if you do decide to try to fix it, Autobody Dimensions in Gaithersburg does a very good job with paint work. Ask for Dale. He's done some paint work on a couple of Ducatis including mine.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm seriously pissed right now and don't even want to look at it.

I see that you said it was in neutral. I know this won't help at all but my bike goes into false neutrals every so often. One time I pushed the start button walked to grab my lid and in the corner of my eye I see my bike moving. Luckily I caught it before it tipped. Now I never start it or warm it up with out me sitting on it.

It sat there idling for a few seconds before it tipped, also it never stalled even when it went down; I had to use the kill switch. I'm betting the angle of the road was just exactly wrong and the vibrations of the engine nudged it forward just enough to make the kickstand pop back up. Fucking sucks.

I forgot to say I almost had a tip over incident like yours in my garage. I was putting down my bike onto the kick stand and next thing I know the bike started to roll forward and almost hit the ground. Thank fully, I didn't fully let go of the handle bars yet. Took every bit of me to stop the forward motion and to hold it just above the garage floor then pulling the bike back upright.

After this incident and after reading comments from others who have had incidents with their kick stands, I now make sure I really kick the kick stand forward and then some times, I even give it an extra kick before setting the bike down.

Bent frame tabs seems to be a pretty likely total from everything I've read, so If you don't want to replace your bike I'd bend them back before the adjuster sees it, then have a good welder put speedy moto tabs on it- send the frame out for a powder coat (good time to do a custom color if you so desire)
Used fairings come up often and new plastic from ducati is almost the same price as quality aftermarket carbon- so you can use this as upgrade time.
Anything scratched or chipped gets quoted for repair or replacement.
Remember they are going to pay for the parts and labor to fix your bike, so if you do things yourself and get some used parts you might even come out ahead.

I'm not sure if this make a difference- but they might consider it an at fault collision since it was running and you stepped off it, rather than consequential damage. I'm not saying you did anything wrong, but I could see them treating it like when a person leaves a car in the wrong gear and gets out. So I think you may have parked it to go into a store and came out and someone knocked it over....
