Yeah, I forgot that the Euro bikes would already have lights. The US versions are not technically street legal, with or without lights. (They came with the full wiring loom intact, so you could buy all the lights, plug and play.) They have a normally configured 17 digit US VIN and getting them registered is one of those don't ask, don't tell areas. So many states are clueless and have ancient, out of date computer systems so it's generally not the toughest thing in the world to slide bikes like these by them. However, a Euro spec VIN may have a different configuration, which might set off alarms at the DMV--especially in California. There is no doubt in my mind that if you bought this bike and put a thousand or two miles on it next summer you would take at least a $5k hit (and probably closer to 10) if you then tried to sell it. I agree these bikes should be used, which is why I bought one suitable for that purpose. Now maybe to you, like buying any brand new bike that is sure to depreciate, it is worth it. That's something you'll have to decide.

It's kind of a shame, unless you are not bothered about it being an investment.
If you ride it it will clearly lose value. if you don't I never see the point in having one. It is strange that this bike was the first with the testastretta engine, won the WSB title for Bayliss but it is often the 998R (lost the title for Bayliss) that is seen as more valuable. It does have carbon tail but to be honest having the carbon panels on is a recipe for disaster because they are not produced anymore. Personally I absolutely loved it. Sold mine for 9000 GBP with 6k miles, if that helps. Don't ride it, keep it for another ten years, might be a good investment. Is it plaqued? If not then it is one of the 150 meant for racing. These had some minor mods. If it is Eurospec wouldn't it come with mirrors and indicators anyway. In the good old days the only difference seemed to be those odd reflectors on the side of the bike. Is the speedo mph or kph, lights left dip or right, can be changed easily though. |

350 of the 500 produced have numbered brass plaques on the triple. Mine is one of the 150 that does not.

What do you mean plaqued? with a VIN
As the man says of the 500 350 had a plaque. The parts manul for the 996r has to manuals one from 0-150 the other 150+. Never really found out what the difference actually is. Someone said the cooling within the engine is slightly different. Some mention the engine castings. However the 150 are in effect rarer than those with a plaque! |
