I would love to have a 1198S, but quite frankly my lower back and wrists won't take it anymore. And everything I read about the Streetfighter says it's too quirky, and I've never been very interested in the monster. Briefly looked at the 1200 Multistrada until the Diavel came out. I'm trading in my 04 R1 and selling my 99 Buell X1 to buy the Diavel. I started looking at cruisers about 3 years ago but was not convinced I could live with an ill handling, slow, and heavy bike. The Diavel seems like the perfect cross between sport bikes and cruisers, even more so than the sport standard or hooligan bikes. I personally can't wait until mine gets here, and hope to be accepted into the Ducati family! |

I think they are really cool. The styling is a bit odd for me, particularly the seat and tail section area. But, the ability to sit up and get weight off the hands is gold for some people. I can see why you ordered one. By the way, I am sure you will fit right in.

Im an 848 owner and I too wanted to have an 1198s. However, due to the talk of the next generation super bike to be released next year, I thought it would be odd to get an 1198s only to be an old model in a years time.
When I first saw the diavel's teaser pics, I immedieately fell in love with it specialy with that long swing arm and 240mm tires. I ordered one and I am the first to have it in my country. What I can say is that it will pretty much keep up with any literbikes out there up to 220kph. The fastest I've gone on the diavel is around 254kph but the wind resistance is extremely "hard" that your helmet no matter how snug the fit is will be pushed back and the visor will be very near you're eyes. The torque is awesome, full throttle starts in sports mode guarantee to lift your front tire. Now the only issues I have with the diavel are the following. 1. Chain slack- The chain, in standard specs, will hit the swing arm causing a "clunking sound" when you hit a pothole or if you ride in not so perfect roads. I have tightened the chain and the chain slack disappeared 2. Back fire during cold starts and when shifting gears -I noticed this when i still had my stock exhaust. there is a "bang" when the engine is cold and there is a "bang bang bang bang" if you rev the engine at idle when the engine is cold. Upon the installation of my full termi's, it now sounds like "Boom boom boom". now this will disappear when the engine reaches proper operating temperature. I do not know what the cause is since I am no expert mechanic and I've been ridding for less than 18 months 3. Keyless start - When I first got my diavel, I found this feature a novelty. all my friends were amazed by this feature which was once only available to some hi end cars. However I remembered that I am a sucker for loosing things and keys is one of it. The thought of checking my pocket inside my jacket every time I stop is nerve wrecking. but as of this time it has always been there. How I wish that the keyless start just became an "extra" feature and not a standard feature. Other than this, I can say that I can ride this bike for 300 kilometers nonstop. I did this when i got my bike and I only have to stop because the gas warning light turned on . I also love its other noteable feature such as "gas consumption and milleage", you can choose if you want to view your consumption as mpg, 100km/liter, or liter -kilometers. You can adapt your ridding styles. Ridding mode. In sports mode, the bike is a bit "agressive" for me since I came from a middle weight bike. Now if I choose the "cruise" mode, the power delivery is much gentler and more attuned to my skill level. Now the urban mode, You will find it boring and I do not see the reason why ducati built this mode. Again the Diavel is very comfortablle and there are dozens of ways to customize it.

DD, my wording might not have been right about the monster, it's just not my type of bike anymore, too much like my Buell. I'm sure they are great rides, just not what I'm looking for. I never said I don't like the multi, the 1200 at least, it is a tad tall for my 32 inch inseam. Although I can touch the ground I'm not sure I would feel secure at lights, not to mention I don't know how often I would do 500 mile days where the multi shines. I even thought about the Hyper, which if I lived more in the LA Metro or even Orange County area would be an excellent bike. I guess my point is, just because the bike is not your cup of tea, why put down the people that the bike is built for. We're all out there to enjoy riding. Some of us are sport riders, some cruisers, some dirt, some touring, some are stunta's, and a lot are squids. I've ridden sport for 24 years, now I would like to slow it down a bit with the option to be able to ride sporty when I want...

I just worry about the direction Ducati is going in and hope they don't abandon their roots, (you quit WSB and build a power cruiser, that's troubling to me) hopefully the next Superbike demonstrates that Ducati, still at it's core is a Sportbike and racing Company.....

If anything, Ducati is going to make a LOT of money on the Diavel as cruiser riders from all of the other manufacturers flock to the new leader of the pack. It's interesting seeing the variety of people on the Diavel Forum and which bikes they're coming from. I think the fact that the Diavel is consistently sold out at dealerships demonstrates it'll be a VERY popular bike for those who can afford the price tag. |
