Default Changing fork oil on a 748

Sponsored Links
Hi there, I'll be changing teh fork oil on my 748 shortly, but I've never changed the oil on a bike with upsidedown forks?
The Haynes manual says that you've got to remove the forks and partially dismantle them to drainthe oil! What a pain in the arse! Why can't things be straightforward?

Hi the simple thing would be to drain the oil into a measuring jug and put the same amount back in. But as long as you have got no leakage this is OK. To do it correctly
  • Slaken top nut it is easier when forks are in the bike
  • Remove forks
  • You will need a tool to press down the spring to get at the nut that connects the top nut assembley to the damper rod or get a strong mate and two bits of rod.
  • You will have to slaken this and remove top nut to be able to remove spring note how many turns it comes off with so that it can go back on the same amount
  • Remove the spring and drain the oil pumping the damper rod to get all oil out of damper.
  • Get measurement in mm's from manual or dealer then without spring in compress outer tube and fill to correct level.
  • The correct level is measured from the top of the outer tube to the oil surface with outer tube compressed down I use a tape measure.
  • Pump damper rod to fill the damper then with outer tube compressd so it is still down then fill to correct level
  • When all is correct pull up outer tube, re-insert spring then re-assemble.

It may sound simple, but it isnt. Be careful; you can find help online with YouTube videos, also LT Snyder has some helpful advice in his manual. When done right, it is a job, but understanding the techniques involved is the key, and too much to explain here. Good luck.
