Hello,
Anyone taken the plunge on the 5D mkIII? I'd be interested to know how it stacks up against the 5DmkII, or any feedback at all. I held one at Akibibara and was impressed with its FPS rate relative to the MKII. Also I see it's bracketing function will allow for more than 3 shots at last. Thanks, Todka |

Yeah, it's fantastic over the 5D2, I'd say go for it if you want a FF. Great IQ. It is sure nice to have more FPS too, but I still use the 7D for sports for the reach and it is still a bit faster. I think if you can only have one body the 5D3 is a great choice for the FF sensor and IQ and a good frame rate for a FF too.

Thanks.
I have the MkII already so wondering if it's worth the upgrade. I'd end up with 2 FF bodies if I pull the trigger on the 3. Still mulling the idea over. Cheers. |

FF is always preferred for wide angle photography as well.
Also the higher end bodies are FF, newer models always improve on low light ISO performance. if the performance of your camera body meets or exceeds your needs then there is no reason to upgrade. Your photos would be greatly improved by just adding more "L" lenses. Consumer grade lenses shouldn't even find themselves on pro bodies. Any image created by that sensor requires the image to come through the glass on the lens. If its a kit or consumer grade lens then you just degraded the possible image down by projecting it onto the sensor through the low grade glass.

I went Canon 60D, get a nice lens and all is good, unless sensor size is an issue.

Hiya Mik, b1
I'm lugging about L24-105, a fast L70-200 F2.8, the long L100-400, as well as a canon 50mm and a canon 15mm fisheye. And a 2X teleconverter for the occasional ridiculous zoom shot. Agree on the glass, pretty well covered there already, although I wouldn't mind a nice wide lens without the fisheye effect. It's the new body I'm really curious about. I think I might be falling prey to the urge to upgrade just because it's new, so looking for a reality check with anyone who's experienced both cameras. It seems the sensor isn't much different. Just the FPS, exposure bracketing and IQ that Edo mentioned. If that's all, I might abuse my MK2 some more for a while. I ski/ride/fly/dive with it, so it does get knocked about a fair bit and gets attached to some high vibration machinery. On the other hand, if I get a MK3, maybe I can fit an IR sensor into the MK2 body as a further reason to upgrade. Then again, maybe I should finish a few more projects before taking anything new on. lol. All good fun. Cheers. |

Todka,
Looks like you are pretty much covered on the wide angle and mid range. Depending on what you shoot. I shoot a little of everything as this is purely a hobby for me. I shoot Nikon and have 2 Nikon D300 bodies. These have the cropped sensor which for me helps out alot on the long end. My longest lens is a 300mm prime but it is 450mm effective on the cropped sensor. Considering how expensive the 400f2.8 and the 500&600f4 lenses are it saves me about 10 grand on the long end alone for one those super telephotos. It is also why I am looking to ad the new Nikon tc-2x version 3 which is an amazing doubler. Along with my D300's I own the 12-24 f4, 24-70 f2.8, 60 f2.8 micro, 70-200 f2.8vr and the 300 f4 AF-S. Eventually I will have the 400 f2.8 VRor the 600 f4 VR but prob not for another year. I also want to add a D3s or D4 FF body. My D300's were upgrades from a D200 and have been concentrating on buying pro lenses since. I do practice what I preach. I just don't have enough money to turn over bodies and buy pro grade glass every year. It's one or the other and the glass has made the most difference in the quality of my stuff. Honestly if you need better ISO performance you really need to look at what Apetures your shooting at. Consumer grade lenses don't open up wide enough. Look at lenses with larger Apetures to shoot in lower light such as 50 f1.4 or 85 f1.4 etc. Wide open they let in a ton of light so you don't need to increase ISO above the threshold of good noise suppression. Not so much for you Todka but for those others who are reading this and think they need a new camera because theirs doesn't shoot in low enough light.

I dont usually change my bodies just because....but rather because the shutter count are too high otherwise I keep my what some consider old bodies as long as possible, especially with the price these day.

Howdy Mik,
The feature I have my eye on most is the broader exposure bracketing range since I'm still into HDR. If I can set up say 5 exposures in one hit, I don't have to set up a 3 bracket shot dropped down to -2 ev, then enter the menu, change to +2ev and take another 3. But again it's not too much of a big deal so can work with what I have anyway. The mk2 is pretty good up to 6400 iso. But it's rare I use above 2000 anyway. Which 12-24 do u use? Do you rate it? Howdy Dansy. Hey I've finished painting the Bonanza wing. Goes up on the wall soon :-) |
