Default What should I look for when buying a used 2009 Ducati 696?

I am looking into buying a used 2009 Ducati 696 with 1500 miles on it.

What kind of things should I be looking for before I purchase? Things to stay away from?

Service records, clean fluids (oil, brake, clutch), even tire wear, cracks on tire sidewalls, rust on brakes (surface rust is fine, pitting is not), chain tension, smooth movement of brake and clutch levers, smooth movement of steering.

any signs of crash damage- check steering stop tabs of frame for damage, scratched up brake levers, bottoms of pegs and passenger pegs, gouges on axle nuts and fork ends, scratched case covers, etc

At the mileage and the age here are some things you'l likely be looking at soon
new battery
timing belts
If the fluids are dark change them out
if the oil change was over 1 year ago change the oil and filter
clean, lube and adjust the chain.

check your tire presures and have a good ride.

I'd be stunned if it needed new belts after only 3 years and 1500 miles. A good friend of mine has a 2007 Sport Classic with around 8000 miles on it on the original belts.

Belts should be adjusted at 2 years, replaced at 4. If it is a 2009, it was likey built in 2008, thus 4years old and due for scheduled replacement very soon. your buddy with his sport classic is risking about 8k in engine damage by not replacing $100 in belts, but it's his money. That's the difference between maintenence and repair, maintenence is preventative and cheaper than waiting for a failure that requires repair.
