Default Shift-Tech carbon key cover...

First off, let me say that I love the quality of all my Shift-Tech carbon fiber pieces. They are by far the best I've seen. That said...

The Shift-Tech carbon key cover scratched my tank, down low under the damper. Both sides. I guess when installed it barely touched the tank, and the vibration of riding wore nice little grooves into the paint. Perhaps I shouldn't be bothered by it but the newness of the bike hasn't worn off for me yet. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I have maybe sanded down the edges or otherwise shaped the piece before installing? I have the Shift-Tech tank guard on the way and now I'm a little scared to install if for fear of further scratches.

Any advice from my fellow tenninetyeighters?
