New 1198 owner, new to forum

Hello guys/girls, This is my first post here as I am new to the Ducati world. Although, Not new to riding. Hoping to get a little insight and education.

I recently picked up a 1198 and have a few questions that im getting conflicting answers to on the interwebs, or no answers. If at all possible, can you guys point me in the right direction?

1) bike seems abnormally hard to start. Yes I know these have staring issue. Mine needs throttle or it will not start. How do I know if it is a normal hard start or if the bike has a issue that needs to be addressed?

2) Race ECU. I was told the bike has a race ecu in it. Is there a way I can find out which ecu it has, as well as find out if it is tuned correctly? I ask this question because the bike is very "bitchy" below 3k rpm. It will spit, studder, stumble and even die out around 1.5k-2k rpm while riding. Above 3k rpm, hang on this bike is amazing.

3) Diagnostic cables/software. can anyone point me in the right direction to purchase what I need to check for codes and re-set service light?

Thanks for your help!!

Synchronize throttle bodies.

It needs a proper tune.
Left side under your battery is the ecu, it has a s/n. This will let you know what for Ecu you have.

How many miles on the bike and when was the last service. It sounds like it is in need of a valve, belt and throttle body check up. Maybe even degreeing the cams and do a proper tune.

Anyways good luck.
Svensken and Jesson like this.

Dutch848, thank you for the information!I will look into sync the throttle bodies and get the s/n on ecu.

The bike has 20k miles on it. The belt was changed at 15k miles. However the previous owner did not have the receipt to prove the work was done. So I can take that for what its worth?? 🤷*♂️

You need to be sure. You can find the routine maintenance table in your manual.

Just give it a proper check up by a reputable Ducati mechanic and have many worrisome kilometers ahead of you.

When you turn on the ignition, the clocks should display 1198 RACE for the race ecu or 1198 SBK for standard. For tuning, would have to see how it runs. Not everyone has the race ecu further refined for the specific bike. Additionally, for starting, many have had success by changing out the spark plugs. I use NGK Race plugs, RO373A-10. Pricey but it seems the start much easier for me.

It does say 1198 racing when the ignition gets turned on.
I'll try plugs as well. The factory NGK plugs seem to be hard to find.
