Error - Fan - 18.2

Wonderful.

I have a track day TOMORROW, have to leave 7am. Obv, I don't have time to take my bike up to Ducati OKC to get them to diagnose/fix my "fan" problem.

Anyone know what the problem is or what I should do?

a) Ignore it, go to the track tomorrow (bike can probably keep itself cool without the fan, just don't leave sitting idle?)

b) Miss my track day, I don't have another scheduled until August 16th, would really piss me off

Anyone see any other alternatives? Quick fix or no do you figure? I noticed the fans didn't click on even over temps of 220F just now.

Thoughts?


EDIT: Probably should have done a search before ranting. I'm going to grab another fuse real quick and swap it in, see if that fixes my problem. I read something about a relay and the wires being too thin, if it's not the fuse, what are my chances fixing this up late night tonight?

It's the fuse to the fan. I took it to the dealer and had it fixed right there while I waited. Should be a simple open the fuse box and change the fuse kind of job. Provided if your dealer is not too much out of the way. Think you might need the dealer to reset the code.

I checked the fuse, it didn't appear blown but I swapped it for a spare and it still didn't work.

Even with the problem resolved you think the dealer still needs to perform some voodoo magic for the light to go out and error message disappear?

On a track day I wouldn't be too concerned. On our race bikes we always removed the fans! You won't be sitting in traffic idling or putting along at low speed. Generally, anytime you're traveling a speeds over 45MPH fans are just dead weight.

Thanks for the reassurance. I agree. Should be fine at the track. I'll get it fixed when I bring my bike in for that sprocket recall.

The fuse isn't blown, so there must be something else defective.

Yeah. The error is generated when there is an open circuit in fan circuit. Could be a bad connector or broken wire.

Go race. Just keep an eye on the temp and you can always pull the plug on all the fun if the coolant gets too hot.

Yeah that's the plan stan.

How hot do you think I could let it get to safely before shutting it down for an hour or two? 250 or so max?

See my previous post. Unless you are idling for prolonged periods or putting along behind traffic, it won't overheat due to fan malfunction. Ride and enjoy.

Yeah I figured that much, but I am riding my bike to the track as well as on the track so, I was just wondering how high I could possibly let it go up until I should really turn off the bike or gain some speed to cool it down?

Damn computers...I just wrote a long winded reply and somehow lost it all.

OK...If you are in traffic here's my thought: The ECU commands fan on at ~220f (104C) and turns the fan off at ~ 210f (99C).

So...if I see 220 f and it looks like traffic won't be moving anytime soon, shut off. If you will move within the next minute or two that's OK. Shutting off causes a period of thermal soak which causes temps to actually rise before dropping, so I wouldn't be too quick to shut down.

The fan issue is usually caused by the left hand fan. It rubs on the throttle cable tube and slows the fan or stops it so the fuse goes. I posted on here before about it. If you look it up and put a cable tie at the bottom of the radiator and pull it a couple of mill, then replace the fuse and all will be fine. There is onlt a mm clearance from the factory so a few hard rides may move it resulting in this issue. You will see if this is the issue by trying to spin the fan by hand. If there is resistance there as it should spin freely this is your issue.
