Greetings!

There are many areas of the 916/748/996...series which have ongoing issues with electrics. Mine has been well sorted, but still suffers from the often "clip"...nothing. Most often after a great ride for hours and after fueling. "Click"....aaagghhh! What to do; always carry spare relays (FI and stater); which do not always work. Then I have "bump" started her high gear...that does work.

Summary of latest situation:

- new Shorai lith battery has 13.6 volts
- Motoelectric starter cable/ground kit (was one click boom!)
- (2) new under seat relays
- (1) new starter relay
- all fuses = good (even Dremmel polished contacts...)
- checked for burned wire connections...
- removed kick stand bypass kit as check...nothing
- I do hear FI pump activate in neutral and after flicking side stand, and engage clutch lever (so it's not that?!?)

What have I missed? Stater switch corrosion? Thoughts and ideas would be kindly appreciated...little Red is getting old fast; but cannot bring my self to part ways yet.

are saying that it starts fine when cold, but sometimes doesnt start after being ridden?
more info please like:
does it always start when cold or randomly start/not start when cold?
does is not start a lot or randomly not start after being ridden?
does it always make a clicking sound when trying to start and doesnt do so?
does it start when relays a changed right after a session of not starting?
will it only start by push starting when the starter doesnt start the bike?

it sounds to me like it starts fine when cold, but sometimes wont start after being ridden?am i correct?

with all you have done i would say check your starter. a bad starter can work fine when cold but poorly or not at all when hot. have seen starter with magnets broken and unglued (magnets floating around in the starter), bad brushes, bad or worn contact on the motor surface (copper surface on the motor that the brushes contact to), even bad windings on the motor it self (non fixable). any of these things can cause your problem. usually the start works ok when cold but not at all when hot. only way to really know is to remove your starter and take it apart and see what it looks like. another cause also could be a bad engine ground, check your ground strap at the back of your motor by the rear master cylinder reservoir. corrosion or a bad connection can cause this as well.

Thanks for your reply. Usually he bike starts fine when cold. It only has issues after hard/hot summer rides, then will not start after fuel up or a short break during the long ride.

Grounds are A+ solid copper leads all good. Also installed a new starter solenoid. Both relays energize, and the fuel pump wines to prime. I will take a better look at starter wires and report finding. What about the resistor? I read somewhere they have issues, I guess this is not related to starter issues. Is there some kind of crank sensor which triggers the stater motor/actuator?

Can you be much more specific on the issue? I can't tell if your describing a starter motor issue (push the starter button and nothing happens) or an ignition issue (push the starter button and it turns the motor over, but doesn't start).

sounds like your starter is going bad. starters can work fine when cold but crap out when hot. if its starting fine when cold but not after it gets hot, could be the resistance in the wire windings are getting high (time to replace the starter. its too bad it is so hard to get off, you could take it off and see if autozone could test it for you.

Can anyone provide a link to 2001 748 electrical diagram. Problem resurfaced.

Battery full power
New under seat relays
New starter relay
All Fuses good
Key on, flip on/off switch...hear fuel pump prime.
So now starter does not do anything (no crank period)

Insanity. Ducati electrical is the worse, have never owned something with this many bugs. My lawn mower is more reliable. Blast.

At the rear of the starter solenoid there is a small white plug which is a common problem, it can vibrate loose and give an intermittent fault with starting, clean the contacts and fasten it back in using a cable tie to hold it and stop it working loose in the future..
