So I bought two new 1098 mirrors today, and wouldn't ya know it... they both had the mirror pop off in my hand (from that stupid little clip breaking) as I took them out of the box. They never even made it to the bike before they broke!
Feeling inspired by my good friend Captain Morgan, I decided to see what I could do about this ridiculous design. First step was to get the glass out of the plastic. A minute or two with a heat gun (directed at both sides for even warming) loosened the adhesive enough that I was able to pry it out. To get it started, push something through that hole at the top where you can see the white double-sided tape.
For those of you who have had the mirror fall off, these parts should look familiar...
In my opinion, that "bolt" is just way too short, and the clip is way too weak to hold a spring that is way too strong. As I retreated to my room, I happened to walk past something that sparked my imagination...
I cracked open the box, and sure enough, the bolts were roughly the same diameter as the one that's too short. They're also stainless, which should come in handy if they ever get wet.
I grabbed a pair of pliers and split one apart, to be left with the bolt and a small, flat nut.
See where I'm going with this? I did a dry fit once, marked the bolt with a Sharpie, cut it down to length with a Dremel, and assembled it like so...
Once it was the proper length, I threw a drop of blue Loctite on there (for good measure), and between that and the spring tension acting against it, I don't think it's going to come off. It'll at least be stronger than the factory crap that was in there! Tighten it down to just "snug", and give the mirror some test swivels to make sure it moves freely while staying in place when you're done moving it. I ended up cutting the little tabs off of the nut so that there was some more room inside the mirror (moving it after the first test fit made the LED housing move a bit), and now she fits like a glove!
Stick your glass back on, reinsert the LED pod, reattach it to your bike, and enjoy!
