1098 Headlight On/Off Switch?

I am trying to find out if there is a Headlight On/Off Switch (formerly call a "Euro" Switch) that will work on the Ducati 1098?

I am told that Europe has passed a law (similar to that in the United States) where the headlight must remain on at all times. And the 1098 was designed without a headlight switch world-wide.

Does anyone know it there is an On/Off switch (either factory or aftermarket) that will work?

Attached is a picture of a Right Hand On/Off Switch that will most probably fit the 1098 correctly; however, I am told that the wiring is not correct. I was also told that there is someone out there who retro-fits these switches so that the wiring will work for the 1098.

Where'd you get that switch assembly? It's dead nuts for the 1098 and has a switch installed where the "filler" piece is on current switches. I WANT THAT SWITCH ASSEMBLY. Should be easy fish to wire it to the lighting relay. I want it for my manual fan circut.

That switch should work, you'd probably have to cut off the connector and splice everything. It looks like it has the parking lights on it which are currently on our ignition switch, that wiring would need to be disconnected and re-routed. Not impossible but a fair bit of time and work i suspect.

That switch looks really clean for sure but you could always just wire in a regular ol' flip switch that I am sure would do the trick.

Ok, just purchased on from eBay, it will take a week or two to get here, then I have to find time to wire it up but I'll post my results if someone dosent do it before me.

For those of you that are interested in fitting the "Euro" switch block, below is a quick scribble that should help.

Lines in red are the existing wires that require some redirection, the green lines are where they have to go and the "X" indicates where the existing needs to be interrupted.

Please note the orange wires that require rerouting are unswitched and hot so disconnect the battery before working on them to avoid popping a fuse.

To make things easier Ducati has used the same colour wires for both style switch blocks "Start" and "Kill" switches.

What I might do is "T" junction the harness to the switch block so the original can be plugged back in making changing back easier if required.

This mod will still allow the parking lights to be activated by the key lock so you still want to pay attention when you lock up and walk away.

Rosco,

For those of us who are mechanically and electrically impaired, do you think that you might be selling a retro-fitted On/Off headlight switch for the 1098?

My understanding is that ALL Ducati 1098's are shipped the same world-wide (without the On/Off Headlight Switch).

In previous models (999, 998, 996, 916, etc.) different versions were shipped contingent upon the laws governing that country. The United States had passed the "Always On" headlight law. This is why U.S. models were shipped with the blanked out filler piece in lieu of the headlight switch.

To circumvent this, you could order a plug-and-play "Euro" Headlight Switch and replace that which was shipped on U.S. models.

Europe has since adopted the "Always On" headlight law. The headlight switch shown is for models other than the 1098. Although cosmetically the right-hand switch should fit nicely for the 1098, the wiring is not correct. Hence, the theme of this thread is now to retro-fit the right-hand switch since Ducati has no plans of making a factory headlight On/Off switch for the 1098.

lol, stealth mode, my big thing is to make it aside from running highbeams for appearance, i know it is vain but hey i ride a duc.

Vaughn i understand they were shipped as per applicable law, canada is anal about there headlights and that is the biggest reasons we took so long to get aprilia and Benelli and why we still dont have MV but i was wondering if you order the OEM swith for the 05 - 999 will it come with or with out the blank/switch being shipped to a country that does not allow it? the part number for the european and the canadian models are the same.

Ahh to bring an old thread back to life.....

Hi All,

I was looking to do this mod to my '08 1098 for track days and just so I can turn the lights off when I want.

I have read all post's in this thread and the "Write Up" on how to do it.
It's appears straight forward and being a sparky shouldn't be an issue.

I have the wiring diagram pic extract from the Tutorial above and have downloaded the full electrical drawing so I can see the full electric's layout.
From this you can see that the current switch block with Start/Kill is 4 wires and one would assume the connector would also be a 4 pin connector based on this.

The new switch block with Lights Off/Park/Headlight included (as pictured at the start of this thread) will have to be at least 7 wires so one may assume that connector is an 8 pin connector.

Now to my question;
Does anyone have a wiring diagram for any model showing it using this type of "Euro Switch" layout so I can see the pinout arrangements without having to go through with a multimeter and test each switch out within the switch block?

Further more although the Write-Up above is excellent my plan when installing this switch block is to make a short adapter cable to suit that plugs into the main loom via (assumed) 4 pin connector and outputs to the (assumed) 8 pin connector to allow the Euro Switch Block to plug straight in.
The extra +12v (key on) and light wires will be run directly to the 8 pin end of the short jumper cable so the light switch can work but makes it easy to switch back if required for sale etc.

Thanks,
Peter.

This mod will only turn off the Headlight, Park Lights (front & rear) and Number Plate Light as long as it is wired according to this "How To".
http://www.ducatispot.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6099

Park & Plate Lights will still illuminate if the ignition switch is turned to the "Park Position"

I've attached the full wiring diagram if you want to see where all the wires go.

My Euro Switch is on its way from fleabay and I'll be making up short factory plug & socket extension leads to wire tap into so I dont have to cut into the factory loom for easy reversel to factory standard if required.

I installed a headlight switch for two reasons. First, I put HID bixenon projectors in the bike and wanted to be able to start the bike with no headlights on and second, I am in the military and I turn my lights off when I get to the gate so I don't blind the guard on duty.

I think it was a fairly easy mod to do. I also put some computer sleeving on the wiring and you can't even tell there are non-stock wires on the bike.
