Discussion Starter #1 (Edited)
Hi all,

Having some issues with my 1098 starting

Symptoms are as per the two video's I've uploaded here

https://youtu.be/cXyo9fKGVt8

https://youtu.be/h-ORwGSzC64

I've checked the following,

  • Originally thought its Spark plugs being wet, cleaned both but that didn't fix the issue.
  • Battery on start up is at 12.5-13.5 volts so I dont think that is the issue.
  • I checked all the fuses and the 30Amp fuse connecting battery to starter was blow so changed that but no luck.

All pointing to the starter motor but not 100% sure. I pulled it out and did some basic cleaning of connections etc. No luck.

Before I go off and try find a replacement Starter Solenoid, is there anything else I should be checking?

Also for a replacement, should I get an OEM or is there other options to consider.

And for the starter solenoid, can those be fix if opened?

Appreciate any advice

Short circuit to bypass the solenoid to check if the starter motor is still working. If it is turning (or not) you know what the culprit is.

How old is the bike and how many miles? By short-circuit the relay he means jam a big steel object between the two large terminals on the relay and see what happens. Does your starter have a separate gear on the armature or are the teeth cut into the armature?

Battery voltage on start up. Did you have your meter on battery whilst trying to start? Did you see voltage drop?
Batteries can show good voltage but still be bad, either sulphation or bad cell.
One of the easier things to eliminate, if you can swap it out for a known good one.
Hope you sort it soon.
