Might be a silly question, but here goes...

I just got back from California Superbike School at Sears Point. The expereince has me contemplating some club racing (CRMA). I currently have a 1098 Tricolore. But I'm not sure I could handle it on the track, especially on some of the smaller tracks used for club racing. Also, I am not overly familiar with the break points for A, B, C, Superbike, Sportbike, etc.

I am contemplating buying an 848 for club racing (not going to sell the Tricolore).

Any thoughts? Thanks.

If your budget is such that you can do it on a 1098, by all means, do so. But first check out the classes and such that you want to run. If you're just starting out, you'll probably want to be in the slowest class, and the 848 may be too much for that.

I would recommend getting a slightly used bike for the class that you are going to run, then putting the saved money into suspension, weight reduction, and spare parts.

Get a copy of the rulebook for your local club (usually available online), and figure out what the class distinctions are. The 848 being such a new twins displacement, it may not be specifically thought of yet. I would imagine you could race it in any open class, or maybe against inline four 750's and such, but probably not against 600's or SV650's. I'm not sure how they'll set that up.

If you're just trying racing for the first time, you may want to get your feet wet with something a little less expensive to see how you like it - like a race-prepped 600 or SV650.

It depends on your racing orgs, you'll want to check. Though typically you see the 850cc bike would race in the 800-1200cc class. (i.e. against 1098's).

I say though the wet clutch would be a huge advantage (the dry ones go bad in racing constantly and you *need* a slipper which is not found on the 1098), so if you can find a class that allows the bike that you think you'll be competitive in, then by all means try.

You're certainly not going to be able to compete well with 750's though. The bike will barely handle the tuned 600's.

Why don't you pick an org, then post up the class divisons and we'll give you some advice.
