I picked up a well-used 1098 the other day which evidently has some issues...
Firstly it struggles to start, and needs a bit of throttle and holding at a few thousand revs to keep running. I managed to ride it a few miles up the road to check the thing out, and there was no power or throttle response to speak of. Engine light was illuminated at low revs but tended to extinguish after about 4k. At the end the cats were glowing bright orange and my exhaust hanger rubbers were melting (really not good) but it would sit at idle which it wouldn't from cold.
I reckon it's running on one, as I've seen posts from people with a similar problem before. I've had a poke around, this is what I've found:

Both plugs spark if they are connected to either coil as long as it is at the front cylinder. However, depending on which coil is where I sometimes get fault 'Coil 11.1' (vertical cylinder coil).
I've checked wiring as far as I can from the workshop manual, everything seems to have continuity.
Ignition relays are also fine, I tested them in the lighting system.
The battery is brand new so I'm not pinning any start issues on that either.
This is my first Ducati, am I missing something obvious?

Any ideas?

bad spark plug?
bad gas?
swap the coils?
air filter clogged?
was the 11.1 code at low revs when engine light was flashing?
