just did 12k oil change and cut oil filter open to find it contained a lot of grit. This is coarse grit like fine sand it will not dissapear when rubbed between fingers. There was also a few small filings stuck to the magnet on the drain plug, loooked like thread cuttings. This all makes me wonder if 12000km is too far between oil changes.Anyone else noticed this when changing oil?

No matter what servicing schedule said 12,000k oil changes i will still be changing mine every 6k max if alot of track days or hard riding every 3k, no oil can survive 12000k in a such a high revving high compression engine.

I wouldn't worry about the 'thread cuttings' on the magnet. It is more than likely all the sharp edges of gearbox etc getting knocked off etc. Of course changing the oil at shorter intervals will allow you to keep up the inspection and see if these persist. You shouldn't see them again unless something is wrong.

Oil and filter every 5-6k on every bike I've ever owned.

I know there are some good oils around but I think 12k is a bit long for an oil thats doing combined engine and gearbox duty.

I'm also a firm believer in a first change around the 200km mark when new.

Cheers

Paddy, I know what you mean about the grit that does not disappear when you rub it beteen your fingers. I have not had the grit but I have had some filings on the magnet. I believe 12k kilometers is too much betewen oil changes on a bike like this. Oil change every 3k miles (approx 5 k km), or 6 months.

I'll be changing the oil next weekend. I'll write you if I see any of that grit.
