Trying to look at the fuel filter, but the fuel lines on the fuel pump assembly are not quick release connectors like everyone seems to say. They are clipped on hoses. Is this everyone else's experience too? Means I will have to drain the tank and take the whole assembly out as I don't want to release the hoses.

The 916 quick disconnects are items 13 and 15 pictured below. However, if the pump assembly was replaced by a 748 unit, banjo bolts are used instead.

In either case you don't need to drain the tank.

When I change the fuel filter on my 916, I drain as much fuel as I can just to make the tank light for removal. Your fuel lines are disconnected from the looks of your photo and those are quick disconnect lines. Remove the fuel pump assembly and disconnect the filter for replacement. There is a YouTube video of a gent in England doing his pump replacement on his 916. Not sure if this helps...
