Hi All,

I have had a Monster S2R for 2 years but I have my eyes on perhaps a 1098 but leaning towards an 848 if they come out soon?

I ride my bike as a daily commuter (short ride), but have been to a racing school at a track (Eastern Creek, AU). The track was the most fun! I cant wait to get back. The S2R was not holding me back through the turns, but when it got to the main straight, I had it pinned in top gear, and there was plenty of bikes zipping past me. I did well through the turns, passed a few people in my grade and rode pretty well I think, but in reality, yes, I still have a lot of stuff to learn. But hey I'd like a faster bike. And yes, I'm looked at other bikes, but I am hooked on Ducatis.

I think a 1098 is probably the wrong bike to commute to work on. The ride position is not a problem for me, cos I dont normally do long rides. But I wouldnt be doing the right thing by the bike would I?

The main question I have is:

I have read that the 1098 gets pretty hot in city traffic. Do you think the 848 would suffer less in this temperature department? And do you think it would be a bad thing to commute on an 848?

Any other comments or rumours on the 848?

When will they be available in AU?

What models? What colours?

I hope there is a red 848S available for me soon!

regards,
M.

My 1098 only starts raising in engine temp when sitting stopped in traffic for minutes at a time. Here in Atlanta, we have infamous traffic jams. Unless you're completely stopped for extended periods, you shouldn't have any issues with heat whatsoever. I love my 1098 in traffic- a small boatload of torque at off-idle rpms make traffic a joy.

There's quite a few recent threads in regards to the heat from the 1098 and all seem to indicate that its unbearable. I image that an 848 would be just as hot as the 1098 - I noticed that a 748 ran just as hot as the 998.

I am not an automotive engineer, but I figured same block, same bike, same cooling system, but smaller engine capacity and smaller energy output would mean a cooler bike?

Any comments on 749 vs 999 heat?

the S2R is a better commuter by far, 2 valve service fees etc. Drop it and there's no fairing to replace. I had one and miss it now. I commute on the 1098 now and again but with the miles I do it's a waste of a good bike (and tyre) I bought an old GS shafty for the commute $700. And love my 1098.

Mate in the end it's your choice and you have to live with it. You can commute on a 1098 no worries. If traffic holds you up,,,,well why ride the bike,,,, I picked mine up in April and havn't had it on really hot days in traffic yet..

Get the 1098 you wont be dissapointed and you wont need more power at the track.

If i was you i'd buy an 848 it,s gonna be a bit cheaper than 1098 and it will be an excellent track bike. keep the monster, it will cost u the price of 2 monsters to commute on 1098 for a year.

My mate had a 853 (748 with big bore kit) and it ran same temps as my 998. having lived with a Ducati in Sydney traffic, I wouldn't bother. The 2 do not go together IMO, eastern creek is another matter, the 1098 would be fantastic there!

As was said, all comments on the 848 are purely speculation. If you can afford it, keep the 1098/848 for weekends and track, commuting is a waste of it's talent.

Move to California - you can legally split lanes in traffic - thus making the heating issue a little more bareable. :)

I had a 916 and a 749s - both got hot - both got better when running carbon fibre cans, and both ran cooler when running water wetter vs antifreeze - made the heat off the engine itself a little lower.

OK, all I know on the 848 so far.........

Same dimensions as the 1098, in fact the only immediate visual difference is the decals that say 848 and the fact it has a black bellypan.

Wet clutch instead of traditional dry.

It will be produced in Red, Pearlescent White, Black and Beige, but each country's importer will decide which colours are to be brought into that country.

Are you kidding? There's no way the 848 will come out with a wet clutch! That's sacrilege. Beige? This must be a joke.

Invincible, you can ride a '312 to work, it doesnt matter.. traffic or not, its never a waste since its saddle time and sometimes you just have to take it when you can get it. I've ridden all sorts of top Jap bikes to work daily and thats where I get my hit when not at the track, weekends are too full for family stuff.

Your riding your S2R to work most days too, so mate really, no use not buying something you love just cause of the occasional traffic delays.

I've got an R1 trackkie and and CBR1KRR commuter and if I had a choice again for a track bike it'd be a modern 750 size... the 1000 is heavier and mate, some of those '600s can be neck and neck with me out of T12 yet soar away down the straight as im on a 98' R1 and am a fat bastard so I'm damn sure a smaller capacity engine isnt a bad thing at EC.

Considering your weight range i reckon you'd love an 848, I know there arent details but I would bet that you could lap as fast on an 848 as you can on the 1098, usually with less effort, better tyre preservation and less overall cost.

Put a deposit on one now :) then tell the missus the price is $2K higher than it really is and pre-pay for 4 CSS schools :) you'll break the 1:40 times at EC in no time at all.

Good luck mate

my ducati dealer told me that the 748s 749s run just as hot and probably hotter. 848 would be much different i suspect

Ducati builds the superbikes for the track, they have as little cooling capacity as they can get away with because water is heavy.

On top of that is the fact that the water pump is designed to draw as little engine power as possible, making it effective at high rpm's, and insufficient at low rpm's.

Every time my duc gets hot in traffic it makes me appreciate the fact that my bike is designed to go fast!

If you want somthing to sit on in traffic every day, buy a Y Ain't My Ass Haulin' Ass!

Not sure

if this has been addressed yet...I have ridden with a 749 a few times and temps were about the same. I also can't see you getting away from the heat issue...if commuting won't bother you then get the bike you want.

Its released. I dont like the white, the wife doesnt like red. She wants black. Should I spring for the 1098S?

Hmmmm. Black 1098S or Red 848.

I think the 848 will be enough horses for me and its 5kg lighter.

Maybe the red 848 with a black carbon nose fairing?
