I'm building a track bike. I have a 996 engine with the twin injector throttle bodies. The bike is a 748/916/996 bitza I've put together from spare parts. It's got parts from everywhere on it.

I thought I'd use an old 998 loom and ECU I had lying around, but I think the ECU is shot because I can't get any spark.

So, I will get an earlier loom and use my spare 1.6M ECU. Now, on inspection of the 748 wiring diagram and the 996 diagram, I can't see any extra wire from the ECU to the second set of injectors. The only extra wiring seems to be at the throttle bodies themselves.

Does that mean the twin injectors work together right through the rev range? I thought the secondary injectors would come in only at higher revs. Is that right?

Are all the pre-2000 748, 916 (except P8) & 996 looms the same?

Thanks.

The 996 loom will be slightly different because of the second injector.

That's the sequential firing only afforded by the P8 ECU (SPS models) the 996 have both injectors firing at the same time which is why some people disable the 2nd injector and run another chip (P222??)

Thanks, but putting the wiring diagram of the 748 and the 996 side by side, I can't see any differences in the engine management wiring from the ECU. There are no extra wires for fuel injection. It appears that the fuel injector power wires are split only at the injector/throttle body assembly.

If the looms are in fact different, please explain how.

the harness from 95-98 748/916 are the same. the 99 and up 748/996 are a little different. only minor differences, 95-98 have a 2 wire neutral switch where as the 99 and up have a one wire. on the 95-98 the headlight turn on the hi beam or low beam, not the low and high beam at the same time. this is because the 98 and older have a 350 watt alternator, not a 550 watt one like the newer bikes, so they cant power the bike and both headlights at the same time.1999 748/996 use the same main harness, the injectors on a 996 are doubled on the throttle body, not the harness. the 916 and 748 are single injectors. the standard 996 are twin injectors which fire off at the same time, which is fine at high rpm but causes the bike to run real rich and stumble at lower rpm. most people are disconnecting the outside injector on each tb and running a um222 chip which is designed to run the 996 with a single injector with a different fuel map. the P8 computer allows the twin injectors to fire off independently, one at low rpm and both at high rpm, i think the P8 computer only came on the sps models not sure though. you could use a power commander to change the fuel map to solve the problem, have to be dyno tuned for correct mapping. there are minor difference from 1995-1998 and 1999-2002.

Cool, thanks Garylkendal. None of the small changes are related to the fuel injection. Those parts of the wiring are unchanged for the entire model run through to the time of the change for the Testastretta in the 998.

I've bitten the bullet and have bought an older 1.6m loom. I just couldn't get the 998 one to work because the ECU seems to be cactus. I have a spare 1.6 ECU so the cheapest, easiest option was to get a loom for it.

Cheers.
