For the same money, and both in the same top condition, what is the better bike to buy, the 996R or the 998S (Bayliss).

Which is better:
- future value / collectability
- 400 Bayliss's v 500 996R's
- Engine (I think they both have the deep sump 998 Testastretta
- both have Ohlins front & back
- the 996R has all carbon fairings
- engine internals ??

I had a 998 R it was one of the nicest street bikes I have had . I'm sure the 996 R would be similar .
I think the Bayliss is still a nice bike but not the calibre of the R bikes .
There is a very nice 996r here for sale owned by a local fussy collector I can view it for you if you like

Riding was meant to be one of the considerations

Cheers Wilks, I forgot you had one. I like the plain look of the 996r over the stickered Bayliss but was curious as to whether the later bike was better or not (although I think they are both 2001 models).

That 996r in SA is a clean looking example. Is that the right kind of money for a local one? I'm looking at another one at the moment but cheers for the offer (your help on the Sport 1000 was much appreciated :) )

The 996R is a true 'R' model, so even though the 998S does have some hopped up parts over the base engine, it's not anywhere near the 996R. Just remember the 996R is the first generation machine, so finding parts for the engine, can be a bit challenging and expensive. Where the 998S/998R lumps, are a bit more standard.

If you care about reliability and keeping costs down, go for the 998S. If you care about having something special that only a hand-full of people on the planet would care about, then go with the 996R.
