Hi, would anyone here know what model ohlins rear shock is fitted to a 2002 998?

Thats the superbike shock. Not the shock that was oe on the 998S. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, Ohlins no longer makes the DU 143. If you don't find one, ive got a DU143 hangin in my garage. It has a 10.0 spring, and the hydraulic preload adjuster.it has also been valved for racing. Check out the HUGE reservoir

Those mass production Ohlins shocks are no better than the standard Showa shocks in the lower spec bikes. They both perform well when set up and built properly.

The DU 143 is a very noticeable improvement over the OE Ohlins shock. It was one of the best upgrades i did to the bike in terms of lap times.

Thanks for the reply everyone, i have rebuilt the shock and freed up all the rear end linkages. It all feels much smoother now. Cheers

How hard was it rebuilding the shock? What did you actually do to it?

It was actually not to hard, it was leaking from the shaft so I pulled it apart, cleaned up all the shims and moving parts (which were covered in fine black residue), got new seals from the seal and bearing shop, put new oil in and charged it up with nitrogen at work.

Ah...the nitrogen part could be difficult, but I might give it a go over winter.

I spoke to a couple of suspension shops to get the oil and both offered to charge it with nitrogen when I had it back together, but I have it at work so I did it myself.

On the wrong end of Adelaide for you Grumbly, but Race Bike Services (at Lonsdale) are the Ohlins people here, and do a good job.

Full service, new seal, gas charge etc. I just give the shocks to Tony and get them back ready to go. He has all the stuff needed in stock and a lot of experience, track and road.

He's a Pom though..

I'm not sure where you are, but Arthur Davis at Desmo Headquarters, Byron Bay did mine.
