I just purchased a 999S Team USA Bike. 170miles... Well 177 now... Those miles were put on during the test ride.
What should do with this... Ride it or put it away...

Any gotchas that I need to know about? I am new to this forum...

Any info would be greatly appreciated...

What year is your bike? At best it is 9 years old with the original tires, so you need new tires. Belts are also way old and must be replaced. While it's in the shop have the the oil changed, brake fluid changed, inspect the coolant and then get ready for some serious riding.

Did the bike come with the red key and code for the immobilizer? If not, make sure your shop knows where to send the ECU to get it reprogrammed and you're all set.

Thank you..

(2007 999s Team USA - 177miles...)

I got everything with the Bike. I have an appt with TTRNO in NOLA to have them check the bike out, change all fluids, new tires, and they are going to check the belts, and probably replace them.

I was thinking about just keeping the miles as low possible, but after my test ride of 7 miles, I am thinking, RIDE IT... I got a smoking deal on this this, so, I know I will never be upside down at all....

I am going to look for spare plastics, and keep the originals in perfect condition.

I had the same good fortune. But mine is a straight red 999. Yours will certainly appreciate more than mine, but what got me to go for mine was the race replica tail section and LeoVince pipes, rearsets, slipper race clutch and a tad here or there of tasty bits like red clutch/brake res covers and CF heel gaurds, but otherwise nothing silly or tacky (Except the stupid red stabilizeer which is now gone)

I test rode mine about 12 miles and came back in heat. I can see how this bike will be a total obsession, worth every penny of investment.

I had belts, fluids, tires, and tuning done to mine and it's ready to be picked up this weekend!

I say RIDE IT..but DON'T ride it....to the mall. Use a shitty scooter or a car for shopping. Use your Ducati to ride to Starbucks or to " no wheres ville", USA and keep your eye on it at all times. Never park it at a place where you can't watch it.

The prices are still reasonable on the 999 because of the book value. That book will be re-written one day when people realize what a special piece it is and how you can't find one anymore. It is destined to become a sought after bike, if you consider how under-rated it was from the start and what the company put into making it in the first place.

TTRNO is first class! Zack and the boys will do a very good job for you. I purchased a 03 999s last year and have done a track day at NOLA with it.

These bikes were meant to be ridden. Ride it. Sportbike Track Time STT is also a first class organization and has 2 track weekends scheduled this year at NOLA. Get out there and ride. See you there!

BTW, yes. Get ready for about a $1500 bill to have the bike completely gone through with Belts, Valves , Fluids etc. You may come out a little less because I probably would not do the valves on this bike, but everything else for sure!

Have fun! Sweet smooth old school bike that will get looks everywhere you go, and is way more than you will every need for track days etc.

I'd say ride it...I have a Team USA as well. I used to ride it sparingly, now it seems to be my go to bike. I put over 4k miles on mine in the last 6 months. I find it too fun to just let sit!!

Today started as an awesome sunny 60 degree day. About 2 miles into my ride... I felt something starting to slow the bike down... I was able to pull off the side, only to find the front brakes completely locked... After about 5 mins I was able to limp about mile, stop for 5 mins and then limp another mile to a safe location.

The bike has only 240 miles... Rare Find... I just had all fluid flushed, brake / clutch, new belts, Wheel bearings checked, Swing Arm checked, and steering head bearings... etc, about everything we could think of mechanically...

Any ideas on what could cause this...?

I have a couple ideas, first issue with the calipers, since the bike has not been rode at all, the seals on the brake pistons are very dry, and when they got warm, the they expanded and caused the lock...

The other is a possible issue with the front brake master cylinder?

Any info would be greatly appreciated...

Sounds like front brake master. There's a bypass in it that allows pressure to release when the lever is let out. If it's plugged or you have an after market lever that wasn't fit properly, it can block this and pressure will build up. Eventually it will lock and take some time for pressure to bleed down enough to roll again.

Are they CRG levers? If so, there's your problem. CRG levers for 999's were recalled. Look it up on the recalls.gov website.

They are PSR's that came on it... I am am pretty sure it is the master cylinder issue...

Since it was sitting for so long, I am still going to check the calipers...

Tomorrow will be a tear down of the calipers, after I make sure I can get the rebuild kits...

After market levers often come with actuators that end up being a couple mm's to long but that couple of mm's is what causes the problem. On the stock levers on my 848, there was a tiny allen screw and you could loosen it and adjust the actuator for the perfect amount of play. I got a pair of Pazzo levers and they had the same system at first so I could fine tune the throw of the rod. Current Pazzo's and CRG's are permanent.

Press on the brake lever. There should be a bit of movement before it tightens up in the master. That's your bleed off zone. If there's no movement before getting stiff, you're not bleeding off pressure.
