Yea you can, it's not too crazy of a mod. Drill out the rivets, pop out the interior cat & guts (this is probably the hardest part), cut what you don't want (cat) and shove everything back inside. Some will even repack them with exhaust shielding (fiber) to keep things cooler, but that may deaden the db's for those looking for "louder" pipes. I have seen people online who offer the service for a fee. Some systems may require a little welding to keep things in place. If you do attempt to give it a go, take some pics...

No more Cat

I took the Cat out of my 1098 exhaust.. Pretty easy, and I'm no machanic.
Only drill out the end rivits where the pipe goes into it, that is where the Cat is for both cans. You can just stick a drill into the centre of the cat and it'll pretty much unwind itself onto the drill bit. Only seems to make the bike a few dbs louder, but it's all good ;)

you guys do realize that each stock can lists for $1360, and by destroying them your bike will be running more lean than it already is.
I brought a spare set of pipes on ebay for $200 australian dollars delivered as a spare set incase I stuffed them up.. can't afford termis :( There are a feel original cans going around from people getting the termis fitted.

Where did you learn that the bikes run lean?

Hicks, I don't think I can afford even half of the list price. I think what I'll do is go to my dealer and see if they can get me some stock cans from someone who put on aftermarket stuff, and see what kind of price I can get.

I don't know if I'm going to cut into he stock cans. I heard a stock 1098 ride by me a few days ago and I thought that it was pretty quiet. I can't really tell how loud my bike is other than when it's idling. I could go riding with another 1098 just to hear what it sounds like, but that's gay.

Yeah but the hell would ever pay that much without buying aftermarket?

I did wonder though about how the bike would run and that is a good point indeed.

From my dealer, from alot of people on here who are tuning their bikes, from my own bike, ducati makes these bikes run way lean so they will pass emissions, Which is why a stock bike runs like crap compared to one that has a full system on it. increasing the air flow means that you need to add a lot more fuel, if you dont it will run lean which is not good for reliability or performance. the termis take care of this by having redesigned fuel curves

I hope no one would pay that much, point being i wouldnt mess with them if they are that much money, if they were $100, then ya what the hell. Mine are in the box, ill hold on to them, you never know down the road when someone might want an untouched stock exhaust.

The stock bikes run like crap? How do the stock bikes run like crap? My stock bike runs like it's possessed; far from crap.

I'm not saying that you're wrong and the 1098 aren't set up to run lean from the factory, but I've looked for something more concrete than forum postings and dealer statements (and what are dealers motivated by? facts or money?) before I jump in the lean engine bandwagon. I know some of you believe that it's God's second commandment to have the full Termi's installed, and anything less is not using the bike to its full factory intended potential. I know that full Termi's add power, torque, sound great, and have a different engine map, but to say that the stock bikes run like crap is a big stretch. To you guys that have them, more power to you.

Clean emissions is a measure of efficient combustion, not a low fuel/oxygen ratio.

If all of the stock engines are running lean we should be hearing about some detonation problems. I know that the over-square compression ratio is going to help minimize detonation, but no one has written about their bike pinging when they give it a whack on the throttle.

I'll gladly eat my words and buy a full Termi if any of you can prove that all stock 1098 engines are designed to run lean (run lean compared to what?) to pass U.S. emissions to the detriment of performance.

Maybe one of you statistical analysts could start a polling thread to see how many people with stock bikes are having stalling issues or other engine problems so we can get some percentages.

I just cannot agree the bike run's with the original installed muffler system like crap or runs lean.
I am very happy how everything runs, the power and the engine run is top class and not a single stalling is to report with 1k miles+ on it. I see forward to hit the roads in Germany with the same system in 08 when I move back.
