A basic question, but how is it done without scratching /damaging it in any way?

Leave the side stand in the down position.
Remove the left fairing panel.
I take a SMALL bungee and hook it to the left front Dzus hole of the belly pan and tie it up to something.
Remove the right fairing panel and the right rear belly pan Dzus. Go around to the left side of the bike.
If the bike is on the ground, put your foot under the belly pan. Remove the left belly pan Dzus and the bungee.
Drop the belly pan down and pull it out the left side of the bike a little bit, paying attention to the side stand.
After the side stand is clear of the side stand relief hole in the pan, put the side stand up.
Then withdraw the pan from under the bike.

Put a towel under your bike and with carpenters tape tape the edges that you think will make contact with the fairing.
