I recently bought a second 1098, a red accident damaged 1098s. The bike needs guages (clocks). I asked around and get conflicting answers to the following questions:

- If i buy a secondhand set of guages, can they be programmed with my key to work on my bike, or must only buy a set when i can get the key that it worked with?

- If i do get the key (together with the guages), will my ECU work with that key. Or, can i then program my ECU to work with that key. (the phisical change in the lock units itself is not a problem)

Thanks guys.

You'll need either the correct key or the immobilizer override code, I believe. Did you get the code card with the bike in question? Either way, the key is matched to the ECU, not the guages (I believe). I agree with the previous reply, contact the dealer. I'm doing a lot of assuming here, definitely get the answer from a qualified tech.

My dealer say that the clocks must be programmed from my key. I asked if a secondhand set can be used, and he said no, and does not know anything about a overrride code from Ducati.
Tomorrow i am going to go and see another dealer, i will report here.

G'day Kenny,
I am going through the same situation that you are. I received a set of 2nd hand guages earlier this week and put them on my bike. Like you I assume, the immobaliser in the new guages has prevented the bike from starting. I have been informed by several Ducati dealers that I cannot use 2nd hand guages because they are a 1 off (as in not re-programmable) set of guages for each bike.
When you receive a NEW set of guages they come BLANK and are programmed to suit your bike when installed.
I have been told by 1 dealer that if I had the original keys to go with the 2nd hand dash that this might allow the immobaliser to start the bike. I am waiting for the original keys to be sent to me. I already have the immobaliser codes but so far that hasn't helped me yet.
I am eager to see how you get on over there, I will keep you informed of any progress I have from over here in Australia.

Hi

From what the dealer told me when i picked up my bike new, everything works on the key and having/knowing both the key code and the immobiliser over ride code are criticial unless you want to spend a WHOLE LOT of money to change the electrics controls.

I agree that the clocks are tuned to the key and the ECU. Every owner gets a card with both the override code and the key code on it so contact your seller if he didn't give it to you. Or try emailing ducati direct in italy. the email address can be found in their website.

Hope my 2cents worth helps.

I received a reply today from Ducati Bologna. Not very helpful at all, so I guess it is still up to some bright spark through these channels working out how to get this to work for us. Below is the response I received

thank you for contacting us.
Referring to your e-mail we are sorry to inform you that Ducati Customer Service is not in the position to provide you with this kind of information since the bike needs to be inspected.
Therefore we invite you to turn to an official Ducati dealer who will be able to help you further in that matter.
A complete list of our dealers is available in the Dealer Locator section of our site www.ducati.com
Kind regards,

Can anyone advise me if I am going about this problem the wrong way, After purchasing a set of second hand guages and not being able to get them to work using my original Key and ECU, would it be possible to use these guages if I had the original key to go with these guages and was able to "Re-flash/re-program" the ECU to suit? Does anybody know if re-programming the ECU is possible to match a different set of guages?

This question opens a whole new can of worms about selling 2nd hand exhuast systems with ECU included, will the ECU work on the new purchaser's bike after it has previously been installed and used on the seller's bike?

Has anyone tried this and knows the answer to any of these questions?

I finally have an answer to this question that has had me frustrated for a few months now...

If you ever replace your instrument cluster (Dashboard/Speedometer) with a 2nd hand speedometer, MAKE SURE YOU GET AN ORIGINAL KEY TO GO WITH THE 2ND HAND SPEEDOMETER YOU ARE PURCHASING.

The other item of information I have for you is about changing the key blade over so you can use YOUR existing key blade in the newly aquired 2nd hand key with the all important "TRANSPONDER" to suit the newly aquired 2nd hand speedometer. If you are reading the instructions that you can download from these Ducati websites, there is a very important 1st step missing.

Step No 1.... Remove 2x little grey & Black Ducati performance stickers from each side of the key. Push cotter pin out. NOW, the key blade can be removed.

I found out the hard way destroying the grip and key blade in the process.

The ECU has nothing to do with the immobilisation system incorporated in the dash unit-key combination and to my knowledge will not need to be reset at all.

This also means that purchasing a 2nd hand ECU will have no bad effects to the immobilisation of your bike. It may however, need to be reprogrammed for your throttle position senser and.... etc, etc.

I got a brand new set of guages for my bike. Now my key will not start it.

If i switch on the bike while pressing the handlebar function switch and go to the immobiliser override area, i can start the bike after punching in 000000.
So it seems as if the bikes' code is now 000000. I got 2 new keys, so how do i program them, if the code of the bike is now 000000, and not my original code anymore?

I can not do the normal key program thing (on with original and then shortly followed by the other keys) as my original key does not start the bike!

Any ideas?

Hi,

I recently had a new set of clocks fitted under warranty and all you need to do is in the tech menu's marry up your old keys with the new clocks. You'll need the key code card to do it.

Should be simple. It tells you how to do it in the workshop manual on the CD.
