Chain barrel missing??

hey all

what the h is wrong here on a friends 998? this is a did chain. missing a barrel?? can this wear out and drop?

There could be many reasons
Manufacturing flaw- missing or weak causing break
debris caught in chain causing breakage
corrosion causing breakage
person who put master link in screwed up on install on the bike

anywhooo.... replace the chain now!
