Can anyone help me with tensioning the chain on a 996? I have the 'C' spanner from the tool kit and can only assume that you loosen the 2 nuts on the swing arm and use the spanner to tighten the chain while the bike is on its race stand? Is there anything else i should know?
Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Thats pretty much it. The procedure should be in the owners manual. If you don't have one, go to www.ducati.com click on service, then you should be able to view the proper owners manual, by selecting the proper year for your bike. Basically all the 916, 748, 996 and 998 are the same as far as chain adjustment goes.

Thanks Fran. Iv'e got the manual and it just says to make sure its 25mm from the swing arm blah blah and no mention of how to do it (of course), if that's not the case-"take it to your nearest Ducati dealer"$$$$..!!!!! So i guess you just need to loosen the 2 nuts on the hub of the swing arm and then use the tool-then just nip up the two nuts??

Rob, If you can wait till tomorrow i'll post exactly how it should be done....there is more to it than you think.....Torque settings for the concentric hub bolts, and they should be completely removed, greased, refitted and nipped up before adjustment.
I'll post what the haynes manual says tomorrow if you can wait till then?

Rob, Rotate rear wheel till the chain is positioned with it's tightest point at the centre of it's bottom run, then place the machine on it's sidestand.

Slacken and remove the bearing holder bolts from the swingarm. Lubricate the threads and the underside of the head of each bolt with a smear of grease, then refit the bolts loosely to the swingarm.

Using the "C" spanner, rotate the bearing holder clockwise to slacken the chain or anticlockwise to tighten it.
When the chain has the correct amount of slack, ( 25mm of slack, measured at the centre of the bottom run ) tighten the bearing holder left-hand clamp bolt to the specified torque ( 30 Nm ) then tighten the right- hand clamp bolt to the specified torque ( 30 Nm ). Then re-check both bolts in order.

Hope this helps.
