Chinese 848 fairing set - Just had to try...

I thought I'd post my findings in one new thread. (Have been looking for such a thread myself)

About two years back I laid down my pearl white 848 while having holiday fun in Austria. Combination of enthusiastic throttle use and a slippery hairpin. Fortunately the damage wasn't that bad and, with some patching up, I was able to continue the holiday. Back home I cheaply repaired my fairings:

but the scratches on my bella have been a thorn in my eye ever since.

After a long time of doubt and searching the web for fairing replacement (front, left side and rear) I decided to just try out those Chinese sets. (purists probably didn't even open this thread, so I can speak freely now :D). Hardest part was to find a set which would match my pearl white tank. I came up with this one:

After some searching and comparing I pretty much concluded that all aftermarket sets are just a big guess and most probably they all come from China one way or the other.

So I picked the cheapest one I could find. Which happened to be this one. Shipping costs are included. Import duties excluded. I see the price has slightly raised, as I payed €290,- (about $320,-)

After asking if he could customize this design (848 instead of 1098S decals and some other changes) he answered with:
My friends, we can do this!
I ordered and paid for the set and exactly 7 days later (just as promised) they were shipped. I asked for some photo's before shipping, but I didn't get those.

10 days later the box arrived (here in The Netherlands).

All the parts are there. Small impression:

I must say, I'm surprised about the initial looks. Was a little sceptic about the decal changes I asked for, but they look great. Only thing they didn't customize was the front wheel fender, delivered in black allthough I asked for red. All parts seem to have been injection molded just as advertised. No glued parts (except for the duo seat cover of course).

So, first impression: good! But I'm not yet cheering. Next weekend I will try to install them on my bike and I'm bracing myself for the worst :D

I held the windscreen in place on the front fairing and that seems not to fit at all. Wonder if I will get that to fit when installing it on the bike.

To be continued.....

(oh, and did I mention that, when opening the box, I was welkomed by a nice Bubble Gum odor)

To each their own I suppose. I just can't imagine "cheap" and "ducati" in the same sentence. Especially when it's relatively easy to get an OEM set of fairings in good shape on the forums. Heck, there's a genuine set for sale right now at 900... Not much more than most knock off sets.

If it were me I would have at least made sure the decals looked like OEM.
I used Chinese plastics for my gixxer, nice paint job, they lined up almost perfectly and were a steal compaired to what people wanted for used oem.

One thing I probably will never do is buy Chinese for my Ducati. Not because I'm a "purest" or anything like that, but just based off of the heat that comes off of these bikes. My gixxer doesn't get anywhere nearly as hot as the DUC and the fairings are warping under heat near my mid-pipe and under the bike near the oil pan. I can only connect the two sides of the belly pan with zip-ties now.

Also, these things are BRITTLE, they don't FLEX under pressure they chip or just break off. Just my 2 cents...

Nice thing about the Chinese sets is you can have them done however you want. Yes you might be able to find an OEM set in decent condition for $900 but for $600 you can have it done custom or copy your dream race bike. Ive purchased 3 different sets and the heat of the Ducati had no effect on them. No warping or cracking.

Had a Chinese set for an R6 chip and break away within weeks of install. And I've got a nice Tricolore set for my Ducati on which I'm missing two of the front fairing tabs that have broken off. The Ducati fairings are definitely better than the Yamaha ones I had, but still much more brittle than OEM.

That said my Ducati still looks good and I would buy those fairings again. And I'm constantly taking them on/off for trackdays.

I have Chinese rearsets that put the OEM to shame. Cheap is relative...

Yeeeah me too! Mad Moto on my RSV4 FTW!! Nice Lightech/Sato copy!!
Yesterday I have installed all the new fairings just to see if they all fit. I did have to do some adjusting, but most of the parts fit like a cock in a lady :)

As "Randomtask" predicted earlier, the lock didn't quite fit in the rear fairing. Had to do a whole lot of grinding there. (Can we conclude that 99% of all these fairings are made in the same Chinese "factory"?)

Going to place heatresistant foil to the required fairings today and place the rear turn signals a little better in the rear air vents. Pictures tomorrow.

@96300NAZ; Of course I have been searching the web for a oem fairing set. But if I were to buy an oem set I'd buy a pearl white set to match my tank. Havn't found any of those for a reasonable price. And the one you refer to for $900,- (excl shipping and duty fees?) might still be a good price, I agree, but I'd have to repaint the tank or ebay one... costs will quickly rise. This "experiment" costed me approximately €330,- (incl. shipping, fees, good heat resistant foil from a local motorcycle racing store)

Glad you got it together. Get up some pics when you get a chance. Yeah I suspect the main fairings are made at the same factory and purchased buy the final sellers who paint them as asked.
Cheered a little early I guess. Two days ago I quickly checked if everything would fit. But yesterday when installing I discovered (again just like 'Randomtask' said) the rear fairing didn't fit at all. Took me about 3 hous of grinding and trying, to get it to fit.

Pictures are coming! All just takes a bit longer than expected (my gf also claims some of my precious time :D :p)

Yeah, it takes a bit of extra work. But in my opinion it's still worth it. Save some money for more important go-fast parts, and look good while you're doing it.

I cracked my tail fairing in 2 places just from taking it off and on a few times.

Ok, continued:

First of all, a nude picture :jerkoff::

So I started with the front fairing which fitted very wel. Only the windscreen is not flush with the fairing (will put a protective strip on there anyways):

Holes all lined up perfectly:

Trying to get the rear fairing to fit was a big pita to be honest. The Chinese fairing aren't at all as flexible as the oem fairings. First of all I had to grind through allmost half of the plastics to get the lock to fit:

And after that I had to widen the 6 slots quite a bit to get the tail to fit. (which after about 3 hours of trying and grinding it did, barely).
It's just as if the entire tail has been made just too small:

Slots installed at one side

Slots don't fit on the oposite side

Last thing to do was place the heat resistand foil (I made sure I got some quality foil as I can imagine engine heat would make the plastics even more brittle than they allready are)

And after that, putting it all together was a piece of cake:

Conclusion:
Allthough it took me a whole lot longer than expected to get everything to fit properly, I do like the result. I'll have to see what I can do to make the tank fit a little better with the fairings, but I think some well place decals might do the trick.
Remaining question is, how will it do on the road.... Will the engine heat of vibrations cause cracks.... I'll have to wait and see.

For now, I'm a happy man :smoking:

Things tend to get more elastic with heat, more brittle or "plastic" with cold. Glad it worked out for you though, bike looks good!
Yep....looks good. Yeah the fairings actually get a bit more maleable with warmth.

Exact same thing happened on my install.
Looking GOOD.:D
Will watch your result closely in May, when we are going to ride in the black-forest in Germany...:yo:
Just sat in traffic on the bike at 215F-220F for about an hour for the first time with the new fairings. Smelled HORRIBLE for a bit but no melting.
