A CALIFORNIAN man lost his brand new Ducati Desmosedici when hijackers robbed the nightclub owner of his machine at gunpoint.

Dan Travers, 42, was riding home from a friend's house in Santa Monica aboard his £40,000 steed when a lone gunman approached Travers while he was sat waiting at a set of traffic lights.

"The guy appeared from behind me while I was waiting at a stop light," said Travers. "He told me to get off the bike and keep walking or he'd shoot. I couldn't see his face as he was wearing a helmet and dark visor. There was no one else around."

Travers was one of the first customers to take delivery of the new Desmosedici in California.

"I'm heartbroken," said Travers on losing his MotoGP replica. "I've been waiting for over a year for it to arrive and I've lost it in less than a week."

It's unknown whether the thief targetted Travers or just got lucky.

Probably Brad Pitt thinking it was Tom.

I cannot fucking believe this!!! What a situation to be in; the D16 owner certainly did the right thing: perhaps he has kids at home and no human life is worth a Desmosedici. I hope people will not come up with some stupid jokes or statements in this thread. I am sorry for your loss man, I really am.

I hope he had state farm! Iam glad i wasn't the first knowing most of my miles are going to be on the road. Now there are only 1499 in the world. The resale value just went up on the bikes if he doesn't get it back. Or maybe my insurance will go up! That sucks man, if this story is true just be glad he didn't smoke u in the head!

Can you guys imagine if this poor guy is reading our comments to his unfortunate event? What would he think? Let us keep this in mind before we post something, ok?

Either overseas or sold through private sale for all parts that don't have a serial number on them and believe me there is enough money to be made on those alone. This fucking thing has ruined my evening

It's sad to say that this might be an inside job. He may have bragged about a $72,500+ bike to someone at the night club, because the robber was well prepared. The same thing happened to my brother. He was invited to go to lunch by his co-worker. When he came back from lunch, his bike was gone/stolen. He was suspicious about being set up. But can never proved it. In Arizona, motorcyclejacking rarely occurs, because majority of motorcycle riders carry handguns, visibly or concealed.

Just wondering. Has anyone heard or seen any other sources reporting the hijacking beside the Visordown.com site? Local news?

I searched Google, Google news, LA Times, and Santa Monica PD. The only site I can find reporting the hijacking is the UK site Visordown. I'm not saying it didn't happen but I'm just wondering why I could find anything other sites to support it. A $72K bike getting hijacked would probably even make the L.A. news - especially since the hoopla with Tom Cruise.
