The DDA kit for the 1098 looks really cool, but I already have a seperate laptimer.

The laptimer works of the Infra Red beacon most organization place track side so it's fully automatic.

The DDA is manually triggered by the flash to pass switch, but includes some neat extra data (top speed, RPM, usb storage, download etc).

Seems to me that a kit that would allow the DDA to operate off a trackside beacon automatically would be really sweet. It should be possible to splice a standard IR receiver into the 1098's wiring harness and have the DDA operate fully automatically. I would think it would just be a matter of having the IR reciever close the flash to pass circuit briefly like a manual rider.

I've got the parts, do we have anyone good with electronics on the board who could work on this with me?

I'm local and have been doing electronics such as that for years. I'd be glad to work with you on it. What tracks do you go to? Track days or race days?

lap timer

I know the Ducati performance part that allows a 999 to use a trackside beacon is this link below.

www.mmcompsys.com/motorsportsdigiteklaptim.html

The best price I could find from a dealer is $610.00 (list is $999.00, ironic in an insane way). I confirmed with DNA that it will work with a 1098S. It would be great to use the DDA system but $610 is more then most lap timers. I am not local but I own a company that assembles PCB and cable assemblies.

That's great info but you're right it's very expensive and way more capable than what I was thinking of. That looks like stuff the WSB teams might use! Very frickin' cool.

The "standard" for track days that I do and I believe most club racers in the south east tend to use an XT Racing unit. Their web site is here: http://www.cc-2000.com/xtracing/en/ultra-lap/index.html

I was thinking we could take the electronic eye off one of those units and figure out how to splice it into the 1098 wiring harness.

My thought on first steps would be to secure one of the electronic eyes and a beacon. Then see what the signal outputs from the eye is as it's activated by the beacon.

Next steps would then be to figure out how to make the outputs from the eye trigger the flash to pass circuit.

Does this make sense?

Good news is that XT Racing is apparently local to me. I'll put a call into them and see if maybe they are interested in selling a finished product to other 1098 owners and be willing to help also.

So far it's only been Track Days no real racing yet. I think I'm a little to old to start racing at this point - 36. But as a number of club level racers have pointed out to me; you never get younger. So I think I will try and do some WERA events either the tail end of this year or next. Probably not on the 1098 though. Probably look at picking up an SV650 for lightweight twins class. I did about 10 track days last year, and will do 12 or 14 this year. Usually stick around the Atlanta area: Tally, Barber, Jennings, Road Atlanta, CMP. Haven't been to Roebling Rd or Nashville yet. I'm also not that fast, ran a 1:48 at Barber two weeks ago on the 1098 so I've got a long way to go.

Just got off the phone with XT racing. They are going to send me one of their electronic IR eyes with a 6' cable. It was only $45.00 shipped to my door. Alot less then $999.00. Now we'll just have to play with how to get it wired into the Ducati loom......

DDA Usage

I just got my 1098S and have yet to figure out how to use the DDA system. I have loaded the software and have been able to download some data (seems to be data from the factory).

I am not sure how to activate the system on the bike. You seem to know what your doing. Would you mind telling me how to activate it.

Thank you.

There is button sequence to press to put the dash display in lap timer mode when starting the bike I believe. On the 999 you pressed the left dash button while starting I think. Don't know the 1098 start sequence off the top of my head, but it should be in your owner's manual under the info on the dash display. The LCD will look slightly different in lap timer mode when the bike starts....

Lots of good info -where are the electronics whizzes....

Recieved the IR Receiver unit from XT racing. $45.00 so it's cheap!

Now I've been researching the Ducati kit online to see what more I could dig up. Looks like the Ducati kit is rebranded from Digitec. From tracking documents it appears that a similiar kit was offered by Magneti-Marelli . It should be possible to buy a non-ducati branded Digitec reciever and use it. Although whether or not it would work with the defacto standard "XT racing" beacon used at most track days is in question. I did find the Digitec product sheet on the mmcompsystems.com web site. It provides the cabling and signaling information for the reciever. Here it is:
Electrical / mechanical - receiver

Supply voltage ................................ 10 > 15 Vdc

Protection ........................Polarity inversion

............................... Spike on power supply

Consumption at 13.2v

With no signal ........................................ 12 mA

With signal ............................................. 25 mA

Operating temperature ................... -40 +85 °c

Output push – pull ...........................max 10 mA

Housing................................ABS moulding

Environmental ..................................... IP64

Input

Range .............................................. 1 > 25 m

Frame length (max) .................................. 5 ms

Output ..........................................0 >5v > 0

Inhibition time – default .......................... 10 sec

Red LED................................. output active

The link is also here - http://www.mmcompsys.com/download_zone/1_data_acquisition/DK_RX_TX_set_01.pdf

I'd appreciate it if any of you guys with electronics experience would look it over as well. One concern that I had when I started researching this was that the Ducati system is CAN. And I was concerned the Digitec unit might be a CAN enabled device. From this stat sheet I gather it is not.

If I read this correct the Digitec unit uses a three pin connector. pins 1 + 2 are for 12 volt positive and ground. The third pin is a simple 5v signal.

Next steps:
1. If someone with more knowledge than me can verify the above I'd appreciate it.

2 Does anyone know what kind of connector that is (apparently it's called a 3 Way SuperSeal) and where can we buy some? Surely they are available through a supplier somewhere....

3 We need to figure out how to make the XT racing unit connect via this 3 Way SuperSeal and see how it signals it's output. MX Tuner - how good are you with electronics? Can we dis-assemble this thing and see how it ticks? I'm guessing that the voltages may not be strong enough from the XT racing unit as recieved. The Ducati parts run on 12v and signal at 5. The XT racing unit is powered by 2AAs I believe, so it can't be anywhere near that voltage. I'll verify that later tonight and post more tomorrow.

I'm guessing when all is said and done we'll have a reciever built for less than $50!

Way to go Mike. Found some more info as well. The connectors can be purchased through TouraTech here:
http://www.touratech-usa.com/shop/s...m=amp+superseal

I've got 3 on order.

2. The Ducati kit consists of a Digitek Beacon and a Digitek Reciever. The specs for the Digitek reciever are available online. Basically it uses two prongs of the AMP 3 prong connector for power. Then when it's activated (senses the beacon) it sends a 5V "square pulse" signal to the third prong on the connector. You can read about this here:
http://www.mmcompsys.com/download_z...X_TX_set_01.pdf

Looks like pins 1+3 are 12v Positive and ground for power. Pin 2 is the signal pin. I'm gonna try and see if I can rig 3AA batteries up to put a 5V signal to that pin and see if that lap timer "clicks" a lap on my 999 when the connectors get here.

3. I have the UltraXT reciever and am looking to reverse engineer it to have it run off the 12volt supply from the AMP 3 prong connector as well as have it generate the neccessary 5V square pulse needed to trigger the laptimer on the display.

Next Steps:
1. If anyone is in Britain it would be great if you could call the people at www. mmcompsys.com and find out if they will sell the Digitek Recievers cheaply without the beacons. This may make the engineering effort not neccessary. If so, then the question will be whether the Digitek recievers will work with the common UltraXT beacon. There is no guarantee they work on the same IR frequency etc.... but that could probably be worked out.

2. If there are any electrical engineers on the board interested in helping with the engineering effort please PM me. I've poked around in the UltraXT reciever with a multi-meter and it looks pretty basic but I'm not that good with electronics. A professional opinion could probably shave alot of time off this effort! Mike can your buddy help here? I'm gonna touch base with some auto engineers I know and see if they can help.

3. If there is enough demand I bet we could get UltraXT to start making recievers designed for the Ducati at a decent price. If you would be interested in purchasing something like this please post and I'll approach them concerning this! When speaking to UltraXT when I ordered the reciever I tried to explain to them what I was trying to do. They weren't interested as they said it's likely a very small market. If we can get lot of people interested they may change their mind. It's a very simple circuit so I would guess UltraXT could sell something for $100 with a huge profit margin. And I'd be willing to bet anyone with a Ducati would shell out a 100 bucks for this functionality.

4. I added a post on another Ducati website I found while googling this. Apparently other people in the Ducati world are trying to solve this problem as well. You can see this post here: http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthread.php?t=22400

Thanks Guys and let's get those lap timers running.

One other thing, the UltraXT reciever seemsto run off 2 digital eyes. These are pretty common components and I'd like to find the specs on them. I'll try to post pictures later today if someone can help track down what components are actually in use. I bet we can get them at Radioshack for less than $5.

Awesome. How much does just a reciever cost? Also, do they know if their reciever will work with UltraXT's beacons? I'm curious what the interchange between these vendors are.

That is a really cool product, nicer than the UltraXT - for a just a bit more money. The screen is sweet. The gyro equipped systems seem very cool also. Makes you want to put a gyro on the 1098 as well......

If we can simply put a connector on one of their recievers that will be awesome. We should approach them about selling a pre-done one as well. Nice find, sounds too good to be true.... I hope it pans out.
