I decided to drain the coolant and put in distilled water with "water wetter". So I boot up the manual to have a look FIRST this time. Says in there to remove the right side fairing and drain the coolant out of the water pump. Fairings off and no water pump. Other side. So I drain it all out, pump out what's left in the surge tank and radiator and get ready to fill er up. Manual says fill the surge tank full and run it until it reaches 110 C. That's right, C. I'm not quite comfy with that but wtfdik. Manual says it'll run out of the surge tank into the system.
Guess what? Surge tank level never went down and nothing went into the system. Bottom line- I should have filled the radiator as well and the dope part is that I knew it but followed the book. Radiator cap's fun to get to by the way. Why must they bury something that necessary under all the plastic anyway. From now on I'll read the manual but I'm going to listen to what my gut tells me the next time. By the way no harm done to anything.

Did you have to drop your radiator to get the cap off? I couldn't get my cap out of the filler neck without either removing the air intake snorkel or dropping the Rad. Dropping the rad looked easier so that's how I did it.

I just finished doing the same thing. You can use a pry bar under the air snorkel,(protect the frame first--and remove the bolts on the Right side of the top fairing) the radiator cap will come out ok without removing the radiator. I had the same issue with the workshop manual. It must have lost something in the translation from Italian?

Usually, most shop manuals will have something in the prefix about the user is "assumed to have basic mechanical knowledge".
