There is a guy on another forum selling complete Dzus assemblies in either black or bright finish, for $3.00 each, which includes the fastener, nylon washer and slide on clip. I am going to take a look at installing them on my bike today and see how they work. Motowheels cautions that 2 fasteners on each side near the upper faring will knick the paint if the rings are pushed down. I may leave the stock fasteners in place, much like the 999 has a similar situation using both Dzus and hex head screws.

As far as drilling a hole out by 1 mm should be easy. Plan on using masking tape and hopefully find a stepped drill bit in the right size to accomplish this.

PM me if you want the guys address who sells the fasteners, shipping is included BTW.

Here you go! I just replaced the 3 bottom screws and the first and last 2 on the upper part of the fairing. Left the 2 stock screwsin the middle of these because the angle of the upper valance would interfere with the d-ring. This is why Motowheels has opted to use the smaller version, which btw is not that much smaller. I used black because it should be black.

What was involved, it is true that some minor surgery is required. Namely opening up the holes in the plastic panels where you plan to use the Dzus fastener, I used a stepped drill opening them up to the minimum size needed to insert the fastener. On the bottom you just have to drill the right panel as the left panel has holes that are large enough. I also needed to open up the 2 slots for the two rear most fasteners, not by much but it needed to be done to accept the new fastener. I just wanted to open up the center part of the slot, so I used a roundtail rasp and opened up the center of the slot, hit it with touch up paint, slid on the new retaining plates, drilling is not really an option. Lastly I had to compress the retaining plates on the bottom and first fastener plate on the nose, due to thick plastic on the bottom, and the was the fastener sits on the front opening.

Here are the pics.

I think I am just going to hold off a little on this and wait, see what else people may come up with.

IMO those d-rings hanging off of the bike look like crap,
slotted flat head quarter turns would look better and since
I'm not looking to "save time in the pits" should work just fine.

I must admit I miss the ease of the D's I had on all my prior Duc's, and yes for anyone who will be taking their fairings on and off quite a bit, is a God send, but if you're not planning on ripping apart your bike every weekened, the 1098 is fine the way it is. Taking the fairings off is not a cake walk by any means, but as stated, unless you're going to be tracking your bike, and need to gain access to your engine 24/7, there's really not that much of a need for a street bike, well at least not for $200. I would reconsider if the price was more like $50-$75, and if the entire bike (all the main fairings) were able to be converted 100%.

Like I said in my first post, I got these fasteners for $3.00 each, used 9 of them, my cost was $27.00. I agree I think $189.00 ($175.00 racer price) is nuts.
In the old days my base 748 came with screws holding on the faring while 748S/R models came with Dzus fasteners, so D rings and Ducati go back probably to the 916 days but I don't know for sure. Anyway, I did the install, you have the pics, and since tastes differ some will like it others won't, c'est la vie!.

The only thing I don't like about your install is that it's only like 1/2 done.
