So it's my first time riding little T. Going slow, trying to learn the road, I come around a turn on an incline and my rear wheel locks up (used too much rear brake)... I save the bike from dropping and as I try to get the bike back across the double yellows, the engine stalls and the f*cken bike falls on top of me lol... the turn was banked and I couldn't get enough leg pressure under me to keep the bike up..

Got a few small scratches on the fairings, a small scratch on the oil case, broke the right side mirror and bent the rear brake lever... totally embarrassed myself in front of a fellow forum member (much faster than myself) and hyper extended my elbow lol.

What a day...

1. How slow were you going round that turn that the engine stalled??
2. Was it Andrew that you were riding with?
3. Could've been much worse. Glad you're relatively ok, and you'll ride another day! Damage doesn't sound too bad.
4. Sounds like a track-bike in the making ;)
5. If it makes you feel better (slightly less embarrassed), even the pros make silly mistakes sometimes. Here's one which I've posted on another thread but can't remember which, of AMA and WSBK champion Scott Russell.

Also, I and many others have found the rear brake on 848/1098/1198's to be terrible. If you don't push hard enough it doesn't feel like it's doing anything, and if you push a bit too much it locks up the wheel. Hence I NEVER use my rear brake...I bet my pads look almost brand new, and still have the same fluid in there even though it's almost 4 years old. The front brakes on these bikes are phenomenal though, so relying on just that is more than enough!

Few things to note… I stalled my 848 once and it landed on top of me, pinning me under it for a good solid 15 minutes. I laughed my ass off because I was out of harms way, but it did twist the living shit out of my ankle and it was a bitch getting the damn thing off me. Needless to say, I think a lot of people have done stupid things on Ducati's, so nothing to be embarrassed about… ;)

Little T or "sand canyon" is a pretty bad road for motorcycles because it's slick year-round and it has lots of quick-blind corners. If you're in that area, might as well go up the Sun Valley side of Angeles Crest, it's much more fun, much faster and doesn't have the blind corners.

Finally… rear brake on a superbike on the streets? Unfortunately, thats a risky habit which will get you into more serious trouble up the road. It's one thing to gently tap it for balance, it's another to lock it up and stall. That just tells me, your using it way too much. :(

Yup, it was with Andrew (dude is fast, and I don't think he was even trying). I was probably going 20-30mph into the turn when the wheel locked up and I was at a dead stop when I disengaged the clutch (probably like in 2nd gear) which caused it to stall. I was so relieved from not dropping the bike after the rear wheel locked up that I forgot to downshift and the bike tipped over into the banked turn... with me under it lol

Just embarrassing...

The clutch is your friend ....use it. And wow, that's a pretty slow turn for a road of that nature. These bikes don't like to go that slow.

Yeah, it was definitely an ego bruiser and I've low sided my bike a few times, but it's never actually fallen on top of me lol... which is pretty embarrassing:eek:.

it was a relatively easy corner too; uphill, not a blind corner, banked.. I mean, it was one of the more easy turns that I saw on that road.

You're right about the rear brake, I use it when I get scared in a survival reaction. I didn't feel like I applied that much brake though, but obviously I was wrong.

I live and I learn.. Luckily the bike wasn't damaged, just some cosmetic stuff.. maybe $400 in plastics and it gives me a reason to take off the mirrors and put the clip-on mirrors on there.

Yeah, I was going pretty slow  lol.. It was my first time on Little T, and it was insanely windy before we got into the canyons. I really didn't know what to expect and there were a ton of blind turns before then... not to say I'm fast, because i'm not, but I was going much slower than I would if I was on a road I was more familiar with.

Thanks dude. The wind was pretty bad on the way there but there wasn't much in the actual canyons thankfully. My ride home on the freeway sucked though.

What the fuuuuck.. People actually do that? That's terrible. I've heard of the velo bikers throwing rocks in the road ways on mulholland, but nails are a whole other story.

The good news is you and the bike are ok!

So the rear brake, funny before I did a track day I used the rear a lot, but I also didn't lean much. I couldn't or didn't want to believe when people would say "what rear brake". But now I get it, you really don't need it and if you are going to use it you should know what you are doing, it can be a great tool but it can get you in trouble. I still use it solo when coming to a stop on commutes and use it when 2up but I don't use it as much as before.

WTF....?

Slick year round?
I've been riding that road for ten years and the only time it's slick is when it's raining. (when I'm not there) And BTW, the road surface is very grippy and consistent unlike most roads.

Yeah, there's a few spots on Little T that if you crashed and nobody witnessed it, they would never find you. Common on any mountain road, right?

Then you recommend Big Tujunga instead? That's one of the fastest roads I've ever seen and not to mention that if you make a mistake on that road, you're fucked. To have any fun, you gotta be going about twice as fast as one would be going on Little Tujunga..

Sorry but if and when I crash, I hope I'm going slower vs faster and I don't go off a 100+ ft cliff. (never to be found) :blind:

Glad you're ok Steven!

LOL no more rear brake it is then. Honestly, if my rear tire locking up had actually caused me to crash I would have been happier..

The bike literally just fell on me at a dead stop after the motor stalled lol

I just forgot to downshift before letting off the clutch and I just couldn't get my leg under the bike fast enough to stop it from falling over... I was at a complete stop when the bike fell over.. it was pretty embarrassing lol
