A friend of mine who also has a 1198 had the lower oil cooler line loosen up and he didn't notice until he got to work in the morning about a 60 mile ride. His rear tire had oil on it and a puddle started to form under the bike. I helped him tighten everything back down and then went to local dealer to pick up some oil as it was below the lowest marker.

I had to run to the meeting so he supposedly topped it off and then put the fairings back on. I hadn't seen him since last week until last night when he came to me telling me that he added too much oil. Evidently oil had gotten into the airbox and now when you start the bike white smoke is coming out of the box. He drained out the excess oil from the engine but he airbox is still smoking up.

Also since this issue his bike will not idle. You can start it and if you hold onto the throttle it will run and ride but as soon as you release the throttle the bike will sputter and die. No codes are coming up nor is a check engine light coming on.

Any suggestions. I told him to take it in as it is close to needing its next service anyways or anyone know a good mechanic in the SoCal area near Pomona?

If you put oil in with the bike on it's side (which some people do) you will very easily over-fill. If you then went and rode it, the crankcase pressure would be more then normal and it would push oil and air out the vent hose and into the airbox. However, it generally doesn't get sucked into the intake trumpets. The white smoke your seeing could be oil coming out of the box and dripping onto the exhaust.

Sounds to me like some of the excess oil got into the horizontal cylinder, past the rings. This may have caused the spark plug to get fowled. So I'd yank both the plugs out, wipe off any excess liquids, get them dry and then try again. Excess oil generally doesn't damage anything, but it can lead to problems like this IF it was A LOT of excess oil.

I'd start as mentioned above with the spark plugs. You can either clean or replace.. replacing them might be best.

Clean out the air box compartment, and check the air filter as well. Hopefully this will clear-up the issues and get him back to normal.
