Help!!! Engine cutout/misfire

15267 Views 26 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Vosey
I have a 2009 848. Recently the bikes started doing something incredibly strange and my mechanic and I are completely stumped.

During riding the engine suddenly "cuts" and is associated with backfiring of the exhaust. But within a second the power is back on again. This problem arises completely at random but seems to be most prevalent at around 5-7000rpm.

No error codes come up - Upon plugging in the ECU we found no codes - but strange enough we found that the ECU was blank for any codes despite no ones reset it (i.e. The ECU wasn't holding the codes).

The ECU has been replaced but the same problem persists.

We're pretty sure this is some sort of an electronics issue and not mechanical but cannot locate the source as the ECU isn't flagging anything up.

Would be grateful if any guys can chime in with ideas or if they know anyone who has had a similar issue.

Could be an issue with the fuel pump.. go get it checked.
How many K's on it?? You could have a TPS going bad. Mine started doing this around 52,000K and it got worse until I swapped out the TPS and it cleared up. I'd experienced the same thing on a car so when it started it didn't take long to figure it out.
Thanks dude.... The bikes only got 10,000km on it. The fuel pump has been checked and is fine. The problem is intermittent and almost is definitely electronic as removing the ecu and re-plugging it makes the problem go away temporarily.

I'll definitely check the TPS sensor... But as I said its so strange nothing is being flagged by the ecu... No error codes.

I've heard of the occasional rider having TPS problems in short mileage. Actually I believe one fellow has gone through 2 TPS's in short order.
Try to bypass the stand sensor.
Mine was doing that; no codes whatsoever or lights on the dash, mine was stalling when I was leaning on her while taking corners and sometimes on straight away under high RPM it stalled and suddenly it started back up.
Worth a try.
Good luck!

Ordered a new tps sensor. So fingers crossed this will solve it.... Will get mechanic to check kickstand sensor on the off chance.

Any other suggestions in case it's not the tps???

You can just test the TPS first and then go from there.

Sounds to me like more of an electronics issue rather then a simple sensor issue.

The backfiring is happening because the ignition stops but it's still feeding fuel. So kick stand faulty ecu or low voltage somewhere.. Those kind of things.
The main problem is that the bike is not throwing any codes... Therefore unable to pin the problem down to a specific area. It's almost like shooting in the dark.

If the above tips don't fix the issue... There appears to be no way of identifying the problem.

Did you ever get this problem fixed? I am having a similar issue...Once my bike gets around 200 degrees it seems to cut out under load. I just had the 30K service done and at first I suspected it was because if something done then as I didn't have any problems prior to the service. I took the bike to a race shop and they said the problem was my PCV needed an update...They uploaded the update and did a few hard runs. Once I picked the bike up it actually ran great and I did a long ride on it (bike never got over 200 degrees). Yesterday I went on a much shorter ride but was in traffic and the bike did get over 200 degrees and felt like it was starting to cut out....
Nhesto,

Still haven't got the problem fixed yet. Haven't tried anything new yet. But a new TPS sensor just arrived and waiting for my mechanic to have time to fit the part. Will let you know the results after.

Yours cutting out at various rpms??

My problem is also intermittent... Went for a long ride a week back and no problems, but then few days later went on another and it started cutting out under load again. ECU not throwing any codes. So kind stumped...

This is an easy cheap thing to check..
Replaced the TPS and still no joy.

Checklist of things done (either checked or replaced):
Kickstand sensor
Fuel pump & filter
Spark plugs
VR
TPS
ECU
Immobiliser/key switch assembly
CPS
Injectors cleaned

Really have no options left.... Only one left seems to be getting rid of the bike.

I am also having this issue. Here are a few things I have found searching around.

One guy had the issue and there were broken rollers on his chain. A new chain cleared it up.
You have covered the rest.

I was able to get a code from DTC via ducatidiag. The code was P0315 Coil A primary/secondary malfunction. Coil A is the horizontal coil and recieves a signal from pin 38 on the motor side of the ECU. I checked the signal going to the coil and was seeing a HZ signal of 120hz.

I then check the resistance from the coil cap to the ground pin (Pin 2) on both coils it was 6 megaohms.

After moving the horizontal coil to the vertical signal the problem was much worse. I suspect this is because it is closer to me as the rider.

Long story short I would check your coils out.
Ignition coil. Had the same issue with my bike. Could ride around all day and it's fine. Could even accelerate under light load and it's fine. Accelerate under a hard load at about 7k it would sputter and misfire. Diagnosed and replaced an ignition coil.

Any luck in getting fixed?
Mechanic came up with a possible theory regarding it being related to the air sensor... As one of the symptoms is that the problem only occurs when then the bike is hot.

So seeing if this clears the issue... Otherwise the only thing left unchecked/changed is the ignition coils.

I think that might be a fix, there are few other threads regarding faulty coils
848 evo cutting out for a split second.. Help

Hi Kevinmo. Can you let us know what fixed your bike.
I have a similar problem with my 2011 848 evo. I loose all power - only for a split second to both cylinders. The rpm gauge goes blank confirming the problem is down to an electrical fault. A dyno run printout confirmed lose of spark that sometimes resulted in a backfire as the un-burnt fuel ignited. So far I have replaced the kill switch, linked out the stand switch, replaced the relays and all fuses. Have also cleaned and checked every electrical connection in the loom. Hopefully your solution will fix mine.

Will be picking up my bike later this week... Keep you posted.
