Ive ordered the HID ballast kit, however there seems to be some confusion between me and a friend. Does the ballast kit provide 2 HID lights in low beam "mode" or is it just the one. I am aware that high beam will be the traditional 2 halogen lights.

Hope this makes sense and is not a stupid question.

996 - if you ordered th 2 ballast kit, it will function just like your stock setup- but with HID output. 1 light for low 2 for high (note that there is a slight delay on high beam between when you switch on high beams whenthe light is cool - and when it warms up and puts out light..... about 5 seconds when cold..... when hot its instant).

attached are pics of my 2-ballast HID kit - seaparated betwen high and low.

Gixxer - that would look good - but you would lose proper functionality of you highbeams. The highbeam is aimed higher so that you can see farther down the road when you need to. If you had both bulbs on for low-beam they would both need to be aimed down below oncoming traffic eye level - so in the event that you WOULD need a high beam - you wouldn't have one. May not be worth the look of having both lights on at once. I suppose - you could aim your high-beam down to low beam levels and drive drive with the high-beams on all the time. But that would have the same limitations.

I've been thinking about making a custom harness to have both come on as lowbeams. I rarely use my highbeams and I like the look of both lights being on. Any cons to doing this? Will it be too bright for oncoming cars?

Hey bud, I like the look of both too, so I just flip the switch during the day. At night I'm pretty sure it blinds others, so I flip it off. Why bother with making a wiring harness? You can just leave the switch on all of the time if you want, and re-aim your high beam. I really like the high beam for when I'm winding through the twisties at night. If you re-aim it, riding at night is going to suck.

Roberto

Colorob, thanks for the link. I got the HID's and they are MUCH better than stock. One of the best 100 buck's I've spent. I still need to move up my low beam though, since it doesn't light too far.

Congrats Roberto - glad it worked as well for you as it did me. I have my lights aimed properly now - post HID install and they are fabbntastic. I'm suprised high-end bike manufacturers aren't providiong these stock - as in the auto industry.

Doc, the owners manual explains the headlight aming - it's fairly straightforward once you identify the adjustment screws. There are 2 screws next to each headlight on the y and x axis (on the inside visible side of the fairing) that move the beam up and down left and right. I had to bring the low and high beams down a bit .... u can do it with the lights on and the bike held up.

Does anyone have pictures on how they installed their HID lights? I have a set and am not really sure how the wiring is done and would really be bummed if I screwed it up. Pictures preferrably with the plastics off so I can see how you mounted the ballasts and also how you routed the wiring. Thanks! :)

I didn't get all of the pictures that I should have, such as the one of the igniter / ballast zip-tied to it's current location, the picture of the bulb actually working, and where I stuffed the wiring. The last image is from someone else's bike on this board, but I used the same conduit and ran it in the same direction. Hope this helps.

I agree with the guy's that aimed the high beam down. HID have a great output. I have them on my truck. IMO there is no need for high beams when you have HID's. It's like haveing low and high at the same time without blinding anyone. :blah: :blah: I will be instaling my soon. Just my 2cents.

EachItAndI,

Nice pics! I bought the 2 bulb kit myself a while ago and haven't had the time to install it. I've been thinking of it all the while as to where I should place the ballasts. Some guys have been putting them just on the inside of the side fairing panels, but I like how you put one under the front fairing, because they say to not install them where it gets too hot....

Where did you hide the second one?

I didn't. I only did the single HID. Depending on their size you might be able to get them both up there, but it was a tight fit with mine. I bought mine from the guys that DucatiGuy was recommending. I believe that he actually routed his ballast somewhere near the airbox.

Do you know if it is possible to drill the hole on the underside of the buld cup as apposed to the side?

Cheers :yo:

Thanks for the pics! :) I never thought of putting it there. I know the other guys put it in the side panels, but I looked there during the 600 mile service and didn't really find much space. I have the two ballast kit and it looks like it's gonna be a tight fit.

Should be able to, as it is the same depth on all four sides. I'd suggest using a step drill bit, as this will make easy work our of getting an even and centered hole. Good luck!
