You can gain an extra bay. Believe it or not, this was my wife's idea.
On her way to work, she would pass a house that usually had its garage doors open. Inside were two Dodge Vipers in a single bay, one on top of the other, using a four post car lift.
At the time, we had a 3 car garage with 12' high ceilings. After a bit of research, my neighbor and I, each bought heavy duty, 9000lb capacity, Bendpack 4 post lift.
The lift worked off 110v power and the two ramps gave me a platform area of 16' x 6' with a clearance height of 6' 7".
The garage height, along with the lift height, allowed me to put a R1200RT on the lift and still park a Suburban underneath.
As I planned to use this mostly for motorcycle storage, I built a platform 16' x 8' x 1.5" using eight sheets of 3/4" plywood.
I did have the garage door modified, they added two extra panels and moved the door rails and the opener up to the ceiling.
On the back wall, I basically constructed a deck, 23' long by 4' deep, 6' off the ground.
I placed the lift close enough to the deck to allow me to store bikes up on this deck.
I have assembled/disassembled the lift 3 times and moved it to two other houses single handily. I rent a manual Duct lift to install the platforms.
