I just purchased My first Duc, 749. w/6,000 miles. I'm In love. When I bought this bike it came with only the red key, and the key card. My ducati dealer, about 120 miles away, is just sending me a blank uncut key for 37.00 I have to get it cut myself. but don't i need to program it? and if so. how do I go about doing that? Any help out there? Is there anything special i need to know about this bike, any querks or needed Info..... Thanks a bunch to anyone who reads or can help me. Matt

The red key

First congrats on the bike! The red key is what you need to get the key duplicated...and yes it needs to be programmed. The key has an electronic code inside that your ignition needs to recognize.

Go to your nearest dealer and have them do it, and bring the code card with you just in case. (I've never had to do this but I assume bringing everything eliminates any questions or issues you might have)

P.S. It's tough to sell/trade a bike without a red key so keep that in a safe place.

So the ducati dealer who sold me one key now tells me i need two, you just put the red key in, shut it off really fast then slam the black key in, turn it on then the ecu starts counting backwards to 0 then says OFF. so then you eject that key and put the red one back in and start the bike. now the black key should be programed. well sounds good on paper . hmmmm only problem is the black key still wont learn. so now they think i need another black key. so i have the three keys. Why wouldnt a ducati dealer with a past factory sponcered duc race team no this. any ideas....

Hmmm

Sorry if my info was bad...I thought the dealer had to do this sort of thing. I didn't see anything in my manual (which I have since misplaced) that addressed copying keys...

Wherever the nearest dealer is, ride there and have them do it...if it's that fast they can do it for you and it's an opportunity to build the relationship. I guess.....
