I was reading the "1098" thread (yes I read the whole thing), and I see the kickstand is back in the news. Mine fell over ONCE but I was lucky enough to catch it. I think it's a poor design and only to be used if there's no pit stand around. IMO the problem is that it doesn't go far enough forward to allow it to over center enough for the springs to hold it solidly in place. I modded mine so that it goes further forward, snaps into place and stays there with a vengeance. But I still use the pit stand when I'm home. If anyone would like I'd be happy to pass what I did along.

Maybe you can get this saved as a sticky as the other mods are posted here with pics. Forgetting to put the stand down is one thing!

I looked at my stand again and it seems that the stand is very tight on the hinge pin. This could be caused by the addition of the switch assembly.
Can you post some details on your modification before I pull the whole thing apart?

I would like to see your modification. But I still feel that the stock stand on the 1098 is better than that of the 999.

I'm interested and I think your point about it not going far enough forward is quite possibly the source of my problem. I'd say post it and pin it.

Can you show us what you did?

On a slightly different note, but in keeping with sidestand security...
Something that I do is carry a little piece (3") of tire tread with a string tied to it. I put the foot of the sidestand onto the piece of tread when I park my bike because the asphalt around here gets hot enough to make it soft enough for the foot of the sidestand to sink into the asphalt, and the bike tilts and may fall over. The tread is rigid enough to increase the footprint of the sidestand, thin enough to not change the lean angle of the parked bike, and the rubber doesn't move around. Also good for dirt/unimproved roads. I tie the string to my left clip-on to make it easier to retrieve.

I apologise for not not getting back sooner but I've had to do some work to my house while the weather's warm enough. I'll post it later today.

Compare the diff in forward angle between mine and stock. The kickstand has to be "notched" to allow it to go further forward. You can see the notch on the top left of the stand. There are two "ears" on the bracket which rest in the notches when down. You can see them as well. The little curved plate goes between the springs and bracket to clear the pivot point. You can either open up the stock one or, as I did, make a new one out of SS. I Strongly recommend that you file a little and try it, file some more and try it. Without the springs while fitting. This thing is not exactly what I'd call robust and there's a limit to how far you can go I think. Stronger springs/spring would also help.

Now I'm going to go put it back on.
