Eh, if you only ride slow/moderate on the street then you might get away with a spring and proper set-up. The next step for faster riders and track enthusiasts is re-valving to improve the Showa component, but at that point it's probably worth just getting the good stuff. If you plan to race, look into your rear linkage as well for added traction (tradeoff is no more 2-up).
