Oil serv.

1st I donned my best Ducati shirt.
Then took off the lower by removing the 4 screws per side. Must fish it through the kick stand, or leave it on the floor, so lay a towel down.
Remove the oil filter with a small automotive filter wrench.
Remove the drain plug with 5mm allen.
I was not able to clean the strainer as my Proto allen was not man enough. At my 7500 serv. the pro can do it with his Snap-on
Install new filter and plug.
Oil fill hole is on the right side as you sit on it. Hard to reach. I installed a 8" hose to my funnel.
I put in 3 liters? Thats what came out, and I am in the midle of the sight glass.
This is how I did it, new crush washer never made it in time, but no leaks.
Please know I am not a pro.

I am not smart enough to make my photos small to fit this format. So I put them in my gallery.

4 - Maintenance operations

Checking the engine oil level
Check the engine oil level in the sight glass (1) on the right-hand side of the oil sump.
Stop the engine and allow a few minutes for the oil to settle to a steady level.
Check the level with the motorcycle perfectly vertical and with the engine warm (but not running).
The oil must be between the MIN and MAX marks. If the oil level is low, remove the right-hand side fairing (Sect. E 2, Removal of the side fairings) and top up.
Remove the filler cap (2) and top up with the recommended oil.
Refit the filler cap and all previously removed parts.

Changing the engine oil and filter cartridge
Notes
Change the oil when the engine is warm (but with the engine stopped). In these conditions the oil is more fluid and will drain more rapidly and completely.

Remove the fairings (Sect. E 2, Removal of the side fairings).
Remove the drain plug (3) with seal (A) from the oil sump and allow the oil to drain off.
Warning
Dispose of oil and/or filter cartridges in compliance with environmental protection regulations.

Remove any metallic deposits from the end of the magnetic drain plug (3). Refit the drain plug complete with gasket (A) to the sump.

Tighten to the specified torque (Sect. C 3, Engine torque settings).
Remove the filter cartridge (4) from the sump using a standard filter wrench.
Important
Dispose of the used cartridge, do not attempt to reutilise it.

Lubricate the rubber seal of the new filter (4) with engine oil before installing it.
Screw the cartridge into place and tighten to the specified torque (Sect. C 3, Engine torque settings).
Notes
It is advisable to fill the filter cartridge (4) with engine oil before installing it: this enables the recommended oil level to be maintained without topping up.

Every two oil changes, clean the oil pickup gauze filter.
Undo the four bolts (5) securing the outer cap (6) and plug.
Take care not to damage the gasket (7).

Take out the filter element (8), check the O-rings (9) and replace if necessary.

Clean the filter with petrol and compressed air. Take care not to damage the gauze.
Refit the gauze filter (8), gasket (7) and O-ring (9) to the cap (6).
Remove the filler cap (2) and fill with oil of the recommended type (Sect. C 2, Fuel, lubricants and other fluids) up to the MAX line in the sight glass.
Refit the filler cap (2). Run the engine at idle speed for a few minutes.

Check for oil leaks. Check that the oil pressure light on the instrument panel switches off a few seconds after the engine starts. If not, switch off the engine and trace the fault.
After a few minutes, check the oil level again and top up to the MAX level line, if necessary.
Refit all parts removed.

Hi, Need some help here please. LAst oild change I had done by Ducati meccanica and when I got the bike back the oil in the glass inspection window was black. Although the dealer said it was fine, I've never seen black oil in my inspection window, let alone right after a service. Anyway, another question I have is in the above, there is no talk about the oil cooler. How do you drain that?

thanks

The oil will get darker after the engine has been run but it should not be black right after a change. The oil cooler does not need to be drained as the oil in it flows down to the sump and is drained with the rest.

Thanks for that, I suspect the oil change was not done right. Before the change the "old" oil was still light, not quite honeym but light. Then after the oild change the tech showed me and it was black.?? Anyway thanks for the info on the oild cooler, much appreciated..
