After years of wandering around in Ducati dealerships (Moto Sports in Des Moines, Ducati Omaha, and Ducati of Northern Ohio) I'm finally at a point that I can buy my dream Ducati. Immediately after they announced the new models I put a deposit on a 2015 Panigale R.

So my question, does the 2015 Panigale R discussion go in the 1199 section or the 1299 section? The engine is more closely tied to the 1199 but in some ways the bike is more similar and same generation as the 1299.

Either way I can't wait, my dealer is supposed to get their first one in April and my name is on it. This will be a huge change for me. I ride a VFR for sport touring and ride/raced an XR650R that's been converted to supermoto. Over the past few years I've also had an F4i, FZR400, and XR100 supermoto.

My FZR400 wasn't a looker. I bought it as a well used ex WERA race bike that wasn't running. After a carb disassembly and new starter gears I brought it back to life. I played around with it a bit, fixed any known major issues and then doubled my money on it.

it varies by dealer - some will take $100 - asking your shop would be the best thing to do

Instead of what? Even though the Panigale R is an 1199 still it's more closely related to the 1299. Same updates to electronics and bodywork as the 1299 but with the engine from the Superleggera. I've been a little torn on switching my deposit to a 1299 S because the engine and electronic suspension will be better for street use but the R is so hot.

Yeah I was going to ask you how come you decided on the R over the 1299.
I think id rather the 1299 due to the added torque.

The R seems to be more catered to the sharp end of racing.
The 1299 would be more than enough for trackdays which is what I do.

If you think the 1299 will out perform the 2015 Panigale R, you are crazy. TJ99 already indicated that the only bikes faster around Mugello are the 2014 Superlegerra and the new Panigale R. The 1299 has a beefier engine, but the Panigale R has ti engine components, lighter crank, and weighs less by 15lbs( 405lbs vs 420lbs). This shouldn't be debated.......

Well while the lighter crank and rods will definitely help the bike spin up faster, they likely only contribute about a pound of the weight savings. It appears that the majority of the weight savings comes from the Akra TI exhaust (10 lbs.) and the Lithium Ion battery (4 lbs.), which are both easy upgrades to non-R bikes.

Still, congrats to the OP! The R is an amazing bike or sure.

the time are what they are. The Superlegerra lapped Mugello at 154.9, the 1299s 155.3. If what the project manager from Ducati said was true, the new R will best the 1299S lap times also. Although the 1299 will be a great bike, its not an R.

I don't think that anyone is arguing that the S will outperform the R. I have a deposit on the R because I think it's a really sexy bike and all of the Ti bits appeal to me. However, I think the S will be a much better street bike with the electronic suspension and the extra torque. If you check the Ducati provided dyno sheets for the S and the R the S has a much smoother curve which will also help a lot on the street.
