so I'm looking at the possibility of a blown head gasket (from what I understand the rear one is a known weak point on theses). Does anyone have any experience or advice on the matter ( things to look out for, issues, good source for a quality inexpensive gasket)?

Compression test will help a lot. These engines are around 150psi when in good shape. They can drop into the 130psi range with bad rings, anything lower then 130 and you've got a problem. I generally put the compression gauge on and hold the starter button until the gauge stops moving. That's the most pressure you'll get out of it.

Head baskets aren't cheap, but generally they don't go bad on their own. It is absolutely not a weak point on any Ducati superbike engine. They're extremely robust and if installed properly, should last the life of the engine.
