Private Sale - What Are the Musts?

Purchased a 2013 848 Evo Corse SE w/ 8K on the dash.

what are your must to’s when purchasing a used bike?

I’ve already plan on:

  • oil, filter, and plan to clean the sump mesh.
  • hydraulic fluid flush (brakes, clutch)
  • coolant flush
  • battery
  • verifying stator and regulator output
  • spark plugs
  • air filter

tires and brakes are near new
should I just do the timing belt?
any other suggestions?
this is a bike I’ve wanted for years and want to do it right and make it last

I'd do the timing belts — they're 10 years old. At least, do a visual inspection.

Inspect the in-line connector between the stator and the regulator/rectifier for overheating. Do this on a regular basis.

Replace the fuel filter, and in-tank fuel lines while you're in there.

When I got the bike I asked the seller about it and he claimed they were done at 7000, but I can't confirm that in any way.. can I? certainly didn't convince me or I wouldn't be asking, and I do NOT want the engine to grenade for a trivial maintenance item.

For the in line connector I will get a look at when I check the outputs on the stator and regulator. Speaking of, I can't find an expected output in the service manual, any idea what the would be? from the regulator - I imagine north of 13Vdc. And if that voltage is rectified from the ac output of the stator, I (assume) maybe 26-29 Vac from the stator at idle.

Fuel filter is a good one I have not thought of, pickup lines in the tank too.

I grabbed the owners and service manual off of this forum from a link.

That would be correct. Above 14v is showing good stator, good rectifier. 15v and above is a burnt rec, so it jumps over the box, boils the water in the battery, expands the battery casing, smells like sulfur.

great, I tested the stator and rectifier today, pretty much as expected, plug is not burnt. Battery is old looking (can’t tell the date) I’m going to just replace it instead of being stranded.

Got my quad lock mounted, I did drill the center but on the triple fork, and already ordered a replacement on hand if ever needed. It just seemed like the most secure method of attaching it.
Reading up on some posts on how to do the timing belt, I’m pretty competent on my accord - but looking for the secrets that you have to have done to know.
I only play a duc mechanic online. Never owned one. But like you, I'm pretty competent on other bikes, and cars. Hands on is the only secret to learn... usually the hard way. Try youtube for belt timing and change on a duc. That's how I learn the product's finer points.
I'm refurbing a 22 yo 750SS atm. The only stuff I've found are related to dry rubber and fuel clogs. For a 10 YO bike, most of it should be in good condition. I'd check the fuel line between the pump and filter (mine was split on the bottom so look carefully). I think I'd do a fuel system/injector cleaner as well. Of course chain and sprockets should be looked at. Brake fluid and pads if req'd and go around the bike and check the torque on suspension and engine bolts. Stuff does come loose on a V engine bikes from vibration. Other than the normal maintenence items, you should have years of service from the bike. I raced my 848 and loved it! Should have never sold it to get an F3 675! What a POS compared to the 848!

Belts and valve adjustment is easy, take you time and do it right. Don’t follow the service manual for valve clearances they are way too loose. Follow the advice of the guy that you will gets the shims from at Desmo Times, lots of instructions on his site.
